A year ago, a company came in searching for valuable minerals in the mountain surrounding the city, prepared to destroy it. Enraged, the people who occupied the mountain broke their machines overnight, forcing the foreigners out. Many of the mountain people descended into the city when the company returned. We stood bemused in the middle of a coffee plantation, surrounded by only banana and sugar cane stalks. I asked the farmer, “so where are all the coffee trees?” He laughed aloud and said, “te enseño! (I’ll show you) but how did you think we sugared our coffee? Import?” 200 years in the game making some of the best coffee in the world and the process has stayed virtually the same here in Cobán. There’s an endless array of trees for every need, each with a purpose. Larger older trees shade other ones from direct sunlight, while some produce seeds that are made into seasoning for popular Arabic blends. Others make good firewood used to cook coffee beans or cacao. A cactus on the premises sprouted unprovoked and was allowed to stay only for its medicinal use. Everything is used, nothing is spared. We approached a thick of mingling banana trees, and I stopped to marvel. “Don’t become too attached,” the farmer shook his head smiling, “Once a banana tree grows it’s fruit, they’re done and they grow seeds beneath themselves to grow another. Semuc Champey, which in the language of the Maya people means “💧sacred water,” is a massive limestone formation — a series of stepped pools and waterfalls ranging in color from emerald to seafoam green. Another name for it might well be heaven. But Hell would be a good name for the rock-strewn, dusty, desolate road that brought us there. I snapped this photo of a Mayan woman browsing a marketplace in San Pedro. It is truly remarkable that over 6 million people continue to identify themselves as Mayan today, and that in Guatemala alone they still make up over 1/2 the country’s overall population! They have been conquered twice, most notably by the conquistadors, enslaved and nearly erased as relevant to modern history.
