It’s a grey coastal day here in B.C, and @bretteharrington and I are resting up for a big climb as a window is on its way. Just looking back to this beautiful spring day in Chalten last October. Already looking forward to the next annual visit.
Here’s a shot @bretteharrington captured of the direct first pitch of The Theft. I had wondered about climbing the dagger directly (as opposed to climbing the thin smears over right) but assumed it might require bolts. As I started up I began to spot more than ample rock protection and soon found myself chimneying up between the rock and the ice. Higher up the fun began, as the clearly detached dagger made spooky noises as I tapped and hooked my way up it, getting further and further from my last bird beak in the rock. Everything held together but my heart skipped a beat each time the dagger made a loud booming crack releasing tension from inside. #spicytimes
Zoom in to spot my yellow jacket on the second ascent of The Theft near Lillooet yesterday. With @bretteharrington and Steve Janes. Photo by Danny O’Farrell. I first heard about the route on my first day ever ice climbing 11 years ago, ‘the hardest route on the coast’ supposedly and unrepeated to boot; it was hard not to be intrigued! So a a dream was certainly realized yesterday when we finally got to check it out. These last two days have been some of the most special days of climbing I’ve had in western BC. Yesterday @bretteharrington and I climbed the FWA of the North Face of Ledge above Squamish. It was our second attempt after only making it two pitches up in December. This is the best alpine route I’ve been on in the Sea to Sky by a large margin, hard well protected mixed climbing and Scottish style ice gullies, interspersed with wild moment like campusing through an overhanging snow wave with my tools stuck in sketchy snice. Hard to ask for a better adventure so close to town. #arcteryx #dmmclimbing #julboeyewear

@tom__livingstone and I took a look at climbing the North Face of Ha Ling today, but a dropped backpack foiled our plans. Hopefully we can finish what we started in the next couple of days. #dmmclimbing #arcteryx #canadianrockies

When the first winter ascent of Ha Ling’s North Face is completed, the route is destined to become classic! So far it goes like- ‘Climb runout kitty litter slabs to gain hollow poorly protected flakes which are followed to the base of a chossy corner – up the chossy corner to a series of shitty birdbeak placements in loose rock – step right to a crumbling ledge, then back left on a decomposing wall which is followed to a bullshit compact slab buried in sugar snow’ – for some reason I can’t wait to go back. Winter in Canada is an exciting time. Pin-balling back and forth between the Rockies and the Coast; climbing steep ice, rocketing down snowy mountains with boards on our feet amongst other activities. The psyche is perpetually high and rest days are a hard pill to swallow. Thanks to @alpineclubcan for their beautiful clubhouse in Canmore and @arcteryx for the continued love and support.

Ha Ling 2 – @tom__livingstone and Marc 0. After going for the FWA of ha ling’s North Face because it looked hard, free of avy hazard, and not a clip up, we ultimately turned around in the night when a heavy snowstorm turned the face into a maelstrom. Turns out the rock on this wall is also kind of nails to climb when snowed up. #dmmclimbing #arcteryx #canadianrockies
