Two Dope Queens ***************************************The Maasai like to party and are extremely gracious hosts. At the end of day 2 they sang to us and fed us and sent us on our marry way but not before we met the community leaders who have formed a cabinet of elders (half women) tasked with managing the wealth and making executive decisions and working Amref to determine the best and most sustainable ways to support the the community as a whole. She is the secretary. And the women is the white Amref shirt is named Nice. She is a bit of a maasai celebrity. But more on her later… stay tuned! @amrefhealthafrica

Day 2 in Kaijado at Sanare/Arroi primary school. Ahhh! Well besides the fact that when I asked to sit down and take a picture with them I broke their bench, crashed to the ground and they all pointed and laughed for which I could hardly blame them, they also have a glorious choir that performed for us AND are educated about the impotance of effective hygiene practices to prevent communicable diseases like trachoma through @amrefhealthafrica “WASH” program which is part of the community water project from my stories. These little plastic jugs “tippy taps” tied to trees or hand and face washing stations fueled by the community water pump ensure that these kids dont get sick and can stay in school. In the first video they are welcoming me “Karibu!” (even though I broke their bench) telling you who they are and saying “hi to USA!”

Kevin was a beneficiary of the arts programs as a child on the streets of Dagoretti and through the center taught himself music and composition and is now a recording artist as well as a music teacher at the arts center. Here he is playing a “keyboard” made of recycled pvc pipe made by him and the students in lieu of a real one to learn on! I think this one is WAY cooler. I am in love with Kevin and his @ketemusic! @amrefhealthafrica

This is Kilonito Primary school where the enrollment is nearly half girls and rising. FGM has deep roots in the maasai culture as they have practiced it for centuries. It is meant to prepare a girl for marriage but It results in child marriage, teen pregnancy and of course, no more education for her. Its health risks are many and can be fatal. @amrefhealthafrica’s “yes I do” project proposes alternatives to the community that would still encourage the celebration of womanhood but allow a girl to continue her education and get training in reproductive health and family planning where instead of getting a dowry you get an educated women who can add real value to her family and community. During our visit they celebrated the contributions this program has made to their community with a poem and a dance and a Mega sandwich 😍✌🏾#timesup on the cut!
