Sruthi Hariharan Instagram – Long post alert – but very very important 😊 I am so glad that the #padmanchallenge movement started and we are attempting step 1 at breaking one of the greatest taboos in India… #menstruation . I have been using these bio degradable sanitary pads from @ecofemme for a couple of months now. The switch in my life happened when I read a few staggering statistics: 12% of India’s 355 million menstruating women use sanitary napkins, while the rest of the 88% of women still resort to shocking alternatives like unsanitized cloth or rags, ashes, newspaper and husk sand. What’s worse : is that the12% of these women who can afford sanitary napkins, produce an estimate of 9000 tonnes of sanitary waste (approx 432 million pads) annually, and more than 80% of this waste either gets flushed down the toilet or dumped in the landfill !!! Any soiled sanitary product is a breeding ground for infections and diseases. Some of them (from the most popular brands ) contain non biodegradable substances which cause irreversible harm to the environment, people and animals who work and live around dumping areas. In developed countries sanitary waste disposal is governed by legislation and in India we are still struggling with normalizing menstruation and the use of pads. There is currently no standardised method of sustainable sanitary waste disposal in our country and thus exploring alternatives like re usable cloth pads or the #menstrualcup is the need of the hour.
