The last few days have been some of the saddest, and most shameful days that I’ve ever witnessed in this country in my lifetime. They’ve also been some of the bravest and proudest. Witnessing the actions and hearing the words of the people who have spoken up and out against the hate and intolerance that some in this country still display, preach, and harbor.
These repulsive groups, the KKK, neo-nazis, white supremacists, teach hate, and spout rhetoric that is beyond closed and small minded. It’s nauseating. My parents always taught us to love and respect every person the same. So clearly, that it is hard to even comprehend that someone could feel this much hate and intolerance for another human being. But this is sadly all too clear.
If anyone has not seen the VICE News ( @vicenews ) story about Charlottesville, I urge you to watch it. It brought me to tears to see so graphically and openly this demonstration of hatred. But we must have our eyes open and we must acknowledge what is happening if we are ever going to hope to one day truly overcome this most horrific of diseases, this racism that still lives on. Many have said this, and I’m only going to echo it, hate is taught, and it has to stop.
To Heather Heyer’s family, friends, and loved ones, I offer my sincerest condolences. To say the words spoken by Heather’s mother at the memorial were brave and inspiring, would be a severe understatement.
Let us manifest peace, and spread love.
