This painting of me by surgeon Andrew Greensmith (who decided to teach himself to paint to this casual standard. As one does.) is a finalist in this year’s #Archibald Prize. He’s clearly one of those sickeningly talented individuals who excels at whatever he turns his mind to. He’s also a really nice, thoughtful bloke. Outrageous. Let’s hope he at least has a disgustingly messy car.
Time to dust this shirt off #Ramadan
This World Refugee Day, I support a charity that stands for justice & humanity for refugees & asylum seekers. If you stand with refugees, consider making a donation to the ASRC Telethon: 1300 697 772 6am-10pm 20 June #LeadWithLove #ASRCTelethon
Ace week hosting Afternoons on @abcinmelbourne this week! My favourite SMS was the one from a listener who told me off for my grammar (I finished a sentence with a preposition). Never change, ABC listeners. ❤️
Felt like a tropical duck was sticking its head over the fence to say “Hi” on my walk home
I’m an academic and, let us speak frankly, friends: academics are known for being badly dressed. But for one day of the year, this boring & badly dressed academic gets to feel like a Queen. .
Because we’re getting close to #thelogies (1st July!) my amazing designer @ay.couture.melbourne has whipped up something sublime. SUBLIME, YOU GUYS. And wait till you see the jewellery @apsjewellery has designed for me to wear. It’s breath-taking.

As a guest, I love taking a traditional dessert from my culture for iftar (fast-breaking meal).
If there’s one thing hijabi women know, it’s how to cover our heads! So how cool to be able to put that knowledge into service for another group of women?! Many times, I’ve been approached by women who are experiencing hair-loss due to cancer treatment asking how I tie my scarf, or where I buy my scarves from.
.
So I am thrilled to be teaming up with @cancervic vic to offer scarf workshops to women who have experienced hair-loss showing different scarf styles and handy tips.
.
HERE’S WHAT WE NEED: if you are a hijab or scarf business, would you consider donating anyscarves and/or under-caps (caps are especially important for women who have little to no hair) to @cancervic as part of this workshop? This is such a great and important service, and if anyone should be stepping in to help on this issue, it’s hijabis! Please DM me if you are a business that would consider assisting – it would be so wonderful! WORKSHOP IS MAY 31st SO GET IN TOUCH ASAP!
Sitting in the back of my Uber, saying farewell to Ramadan with what was a massive coffee. Ramadan, you were like a soft blanket that fell over my weary shoulders and wrapped my tired soul in your gentle warmth. You emptied me out in the best of ways. I will miss you.
Sweet little Yasmin here is only 6. Like 500,000 other Rohingya children, she fled violence & killings in Myanmar, only to face a new risk in Bangladesh: floods (and subsequent disease) from monsoons. .
My friends, this is urgent. The Rohingya people have faced so much horror already. Now, more than ever, is the time for us to help. .
In these last ten days of Ramadan, please donate generously to @unicefaustralia, who are on the ground working around the clock to provide supplies & protection for kids like Yasmin. (Link to donate in my bio).
Ramadan Mubarak!
Well HELLO! This made me laugh too hard 😂 #ISweptMyHairOverToTheSide
Tomorrow is Mother’s Day, so let’s add a little something to the burnt toast & macaroni necklaces your mum will be receiving. Why not add a gift that will help mums and their babies around the world stay safe? On behalf of your amazing mum, you can purchase a vaccination pack, or food sachets, or even a safe birthing bed. Then @unicefaustralia will send you a personalised card you can give your mum, and unicef will deliver real, life-saving gifts on her behalf. Those flowers will wilt, and that cold cup of tea made for breakfast in bed may quietly be tipped down the sink when you’re not looking. But this gifts lasts, and it’s a genuine life-saver; just like your mum. Link’s in my bio.
This back copy with me is part of the Dumbo Feather Mother’s Day pack, also featuring far more important and interesting people like Gloria Steinem! Buy for mum and worst case scenario, she can use my head as a coaster.
Shout out to any of my students who follow me here and politely smile at my dumb and scandalously outdated jokes in lectures. You all get a High Distinction. (PS now get off Instagram and go study). Via @betootaadvocate
When people ask, “Do you shower in that thing?” .(EDITED TO ADD: NO WE DONT. It would be like me saying to you, “I’ve never seen you without your pants on. Do you shower in them?” 🙃)
The monsoons have hit Rohingya shelters in the world’s largest refugee camp. There are already reports of people, including children, being buried alive in the mudslides. In just one month, the camps have had more rain than Melbourne receives in a whole year, and with shelters made only of bamboo and tarpaulin to protect them, the Rohingya people – a people who have already faced unspeakable horror – are facing a massive crisis.
When we hear such horrible things, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
.
But we CAN show up for the Rohingya people. .
We can show up by supporting the work of orgs like @unicefaustralia, who are there on the ground helping. Maybe we can’t be there physically, but WE CAN STILL SHOW UP.
.
Show up by hitting the link in my bio and donating.
Tonight is the 27th night of Ramadan. Remember to look outward as well as inward, and consider donating to @unicefaustralia ‘s urgent appeal for Rohingya children. In the world’s biggest refugee camp, the coming monsoons can be deadly. Can you help save a life tonight? #BetterThan1000Months #SavingOneLifeIsLikeSavingAllOfHumanity
