A weaving tradition, almost 1,200-years-old is on the verge of extinction, and blame it all on commercialization and the adverse effects of mass production.
By saying that it is likely to go extinct I don’t mean the saree is set to suddenly disappear from shop shelves; but that the flawless and faster powerlooms have replaced the not so perfect, handloom sarees, spun using the charkha. Yet, the original handloom saree woven intricately and painstakingly is always a going to be a class apart . .
If you are a saree lover or love to see the women in your lives clad in a saree – do buy the ilkal and help a community π(there are many online stores – not endorsing any – but through your purchase even the little that reaches the weaver makes a difference.) And do note the original handloom sarees are way more expensive than their powerloom counterparts . More on that later π

Working the loom had tired her out … her patience was wearing off and she wondered if he’d ever come back. Even if he did, would he want her anymore? So many questions ran through her mind… Does he ever think of her as much as she thought of him? Would he come back and ask for her hand in marriage ? If not, how would she convince her heart ….well, maybe her heart she could still nurse, but what of her trecherous body ? How would that survive without him ? Wait… then tell me, was this ever love? Or was that night just some lusty carnal desire satiated? But no … there was love – she saw it in his eyes… is she she sure ? Anyway what’s wrong with lust ? If lust were wrong then he was wrong too … as wrong as her… But then, who decides these rights and wrongs ? Who becomes the judge of two souls coming together ….outside of ‘marriage’ ….. The loom pricked her finger drawing a smaΔΊl drop of blood . She was hurt. πΈ @ganeshdevarajan

She took a moment, and let herself run astray. Twirling the end of her saree…. her mind raced back to that night when everything changed- and she gave herself away. She remembered how close he came, breathing into each other, she lowered her eyes not daring to meet the passion in his, he stared, heartbeats rising. She wondered what he saw in her, and looked up half lidded at his sinfully handsome face. At that moment, she felt his lips…. The thoughts of all that he could do to her body ravaged her heart . His touch, his smell, his eyes consumed her mind and she merely existed… For now, without him it all felt meaningless, like the loom that turned without its thread . She fit within him so perfectly, entwined in each other’s arms they lay. Her body wrecked by love, a love she finally recognised . It was love …wasn’t it…. And suddenly, work called- it always does. She snapped back, smiled to herself, kissed him one last time in her head… and went back to spinning her loom. .

“We are proud of who we are. And irrespective of how hard it is – we know of nothing else to do” she said. At 16 she began working the loom . And today at the age of 30, she seems to have no regrets about the work she does. .
The weaver community, enjoy a sense of innate freedom. A tranquility of sorts that they get from practising their art form. Watching them weave, feels like they exist within this meditative trance which help them create…to weave the same cloth for many hours that span into days … thread by thread, painstakingly. Lovingly…. .

Story of that dress(Read only if bored): That coat/dress is my latest go-to garment for almost everything. It can be worn over shorts to a long dress, is light, extremely comfortable, and has a design I love. We all have one such clothing item dont we? – an unconscious favorite our hands reach for involuntarily in our cupboards. Ok, so this is one such for me.
Now this overcoat-(actually) belonged to my dear friend @meghanagaonkar until she gave it up at the garage sale we organised #VanityTrunkSale – and obviously it didnt even reach the stands π I bought it, wore it the very same day and ever since I wear it atleast once a week! And thats what I think is so beautiful about garage sales …. you find use/celebrate something other’s dont have the need for anymore . It helps declutter your cupboard, creates an enviroment where you share and exchange rather than buy and hoard. Anyway this coat sure reminds me of that day we organised our super successful garage sale, and you Maggie π

This video makes my blood boil – and I don’t want to be celebratory just cos I have to be.
I don’t feel it . I don’t see it . Independance- what does it truly mean in Indian society today?

We need independance from people like this . Independance from regressive, un just, inequal, perspectives like this . Independance from that helplessness we feel, cos we aren’t able to do anything about ideologies such as this / we just dont have the time to worry about people like this .
And of course, gender discrimination, such as this, is just one of the myriad issues. Religious intolerance, hazardous civic management issues, weak, out-of-date, insufficient laws and legislations; our country is reeking with so many issues- the list could go on. .
.
So I wonder….
Are we truly independant and free ? Are we today, as a society moving towards being better than what we were yesterday? Are we being responsible, and leaving a better tomorrow for our children of today ? .
Its 72 years since 1947.
And I cant help but wonder, where do we stand today ?

Here is a list of the collection centers in bangalore where many items are being collected for the relief camps set up owing to kerala floods . The next image has urgent requirements for now- please buy them and drop it off at these centers . DONT GIVE USED CLOTHES OR ITEMS.
These Centers also require volunteers and it would be great it we all could come together to help out . Please SHARE AND SPREAD THE WORD .
