We are so proud of daddy and hubby extraordinaire for shaving his head to support kid’s cancer charity @stbaldricks after meeting his fund raising goal. Thanks to everyone who donated. #Souffle and I were there to cheer him on, and the girls are quite chuffed: they offered him their headbands and cute 🧢 as his first comment when we stepped out with his newly tonsured head was, damn it’s cold! Brought back deeply personal chemo memories, because you don’t realize how much heat escapes through the head until you don’t have hair 🙏🏼 As a mom today, it literally tears me up to imagine what children experience during cancer treatment, how their innate wisdom rises through difficulty and how easy for us to support their cancer journey. Makes me want to do as much as I can to ensure their survival. If you are moved, find an initiative that calls for your support today 🙏🏼

I’ve been taking some time to choose my word for 2019. The first step in understanding where you are going is to see from where you are coming. . .

2018 was full of learnings and growth, not all of it easy or pleasant. I peeled off one more layer of the proverbial onion, wept as I laid my hands on my raw skin, murmured words of compassion to my heart. .
.
Last year I practised being a bit less judgemental, less self- righteous, less serious, more sensual, more accepting. Sometimes I succeeded, but not always. I birthed a book and two babies, shared my story again and again, painted my face, faced the lights, uncombed my hair and evaded time. But there was always a whisper of longing flowing through my days. .
.
I’ve always been a seeker, a secret ecstatic dancer and moonlighter of all things to do with spirit. There was a period of my life when I fell out of conventional time to wander the mountains and watch the movements of my tricky, tricky mind. I might even have managed to step out of it briefly, briefly, for a flickering second. .
.
So all this is to say that without obeying the call I am merely half available to this life. Without sacred ritual and the ability to sing with the wolves in my veins I’m not complete. But what I have learned about balance, nurturing and the power of love that radiates from my family and babies is a powerful grounding talisman, breaking the spell of self isolation and the lure of freedom as an escape hatch. .

I’m still working on my word for this year using journaling and meditation. I will know I have found it when flowers bloom in my eyes and I see them reflected back in the iris of my babies eyes. Because the most wondrous part of my journey is yet to begin, surrounded by the light of a tribe of my own. But I also know I will have to be more deliberate now, to dance with both logic and wakefulness, along with and the dreamstate of my being, to allow grace. To follow love. Always to follow love.

I just love seeing people pose for photos in front of the majestic installation in Delhi airport. These tourists appear to be pahadi people. I imagine it’s possible to become weary of soaring peaks and mountain views. But I believe I could trade in city life for mountain life with ease.

A SIKH PRAYER FOR AMERICA ON NOV 9, 2016
.
In our tears and agony, we hold our children close and confront the truth: The future is dark.
.
But my faith dares me to ask:
.
What if this darkness is not the darkness of the tomb, but the darkness of the womb?
.
What if our America is not dead but a country still waiting to be born? What if the story of America is one long labor?
.
What if all the mothers who came before us, who survived genocide and occupation, slavery and Jim Crow, racism and xenophobia and Islamophobia, political oppression and sexual assault, are standing behind us now, whispering in our ear: You are brave? What if this is our Great Contraction before we birth a new future?
.
Remember the wisdom of the midwife:
.
“Breathe,” she says. Then: “Push.”
.
Now it is time to breathe. But soon it will be time to push; soon it will be time to fight — for those we love — Muslim father, Sikh son, trans daughter, indigenous brother, immigrant sister, white worker, the poor and forgotten, and the ones who cast their vote out of resentment and fear.

Let us make an oath to fight for the soul of America — “The land that never has been yet— And yet must be” (Langston Hughes) — with Revolutionary Love and relentless optimism. And so I pray this Sikh prayer:
