Dee is a wildly talented and versatile writer/producer whose credits range from critically acclaimed dramas like BOSS, to network hits like NASHVILLE, to the world-building, science-fiction odyssey, MARS. An openly gay woman of color, during her extensive years on name brand shows like E.R. and THE GOOD WIFE, Dee championed the representation of minority characters, marrying diversity to smart and compelling drama and delivering it to millions of homes around the world. We are so very sad to announce that last night in Dallas, Texas, Anne’s beloved mother-in-law, Margaret Cruise Rice, died at the age of 97. Here she is with her son, Anne’s late husband and Christopher’s father, Stan Rice, when he was a little boy. Margaret lived a long and full life and was always wonderfully supportive of Anne and her work. The family is extremely grateful to Stan’s siblings who did so much to care for Margaret in her final years.

Every Christmas, @annericeauthor ‘s dear friend, the writer @ericshawquinn, gifts her several new frog prince statues. Here’s how the tradition got started. Years ago, when Anne moved back to California after decades in New Orleans, she hosted a housewarming party at her new home in La Jolla. Her son @christopher.rice.writer asked all of his writer friends to bring Anne the gift of one of their own books – signed, of course – so she’d have something to line her shelves with. Christopher’s friend @ericshawquinn not only did exactly that, he also gifted Anne two bookends shaped like frog princes. Anne was overwhelmed with emotion. Eric had no idea that her late husband Stan, who had died recently of an inoperable brain tumor, had referred to their old home in the Garden District of New Orleans as Toad Hall. She took Eric’s gift as a sign that Stan had blessed the move and was with her still. @ericshawquinn and Anne became very close friends in the years following, and every Christmas, the presentation of his new frog princes during lunch everyday of his visit keeps Stan’s spirit and this special memory alive. #authorsofinstagram #writersofinstagram #annerice #ericshawquinn #frogprince #blessings #stanrice
We’re grateful for Anne’s sister-in-law Cynthia who makes an effort to preserve and scan many old family photos. Here’s a wonderful picture she recently discovered of Anne’s late husband, Stan, taken during his high school years in Dallas, Texas. Stan passed away from an inoperable brain tumor in 2002 after a long and accomplished career as a poet, painter and college professor.
