‘I hated that feeling of hiding and being dishonest. I was already going through so much and on top of that the extra pressure of pretending was too much’ says Lisa of her decision to go public with her cancer. – People Magazine India, May 2010

Friends:
It’s DADU’S birthday. He is 86 today 🙏🏼 My precious family is celebrating in Hong Kong while I’m in Toronto. Doesn’t matter, I’ll be back in a few days and love knows no time zones (jet lag working for me in this case!)
I wanted to share that exactly one year ago, Jason and I took my baba to Bangkok for his birthday, where we presented him with an ultrasound of two wee, strawberry sized bodies containing beating hearts. It was our way of marking our journey into parenthood and we celebrated by over eating at the night markets and taking a moonlight river cruise.
Please send your best wishes to Dadu. He is the wisest, most remarkable spirit with the mystic’s ability to touch people and effortlessly fill space with tenderness and peace.

Everyone is handed adversity in life.
No one’s journey is easy.
It’s how you react that makes people unique…how can you endure cancer and draw from it healing? This is the question no one else can answer but yourself.

The things you stumble upon while clearing your storage unit during a snow storm; musty towels, CDs, vintage lamps, old tax returns, a box of Garfield cartoon books and your Bombay Dyeing poster 🤪🙄

When it’s so f*#%ing cold and you survived the walk back in minus 30 and your brain hasn’t yet thawed BUT your toque-less hair looks spectacular after a sesh @wearestudio67 and lightens the mood as you brush frostbite from all your tips. Studio67
In the interest of sourcing images for my book #ClosetotheBone I’m confronting all my selves, like this image circa 1998; I can clearly see the ways in which I’ve reinvented myself, hidden behind makeup and image or adapted myself to the ever changing perceptions of what’s beautiful or glamorous or sexy or ‘now’. Takes a lot of effort to cover your essence and I’m so fucking grateful for age: both the age we are living in today and my age- 46- which has liberated me from being anyone but myself. I am my own fantasy.

Two years ago today I was touched by a realized being with the giggle of a mischievous child. Gratitude always to @vanafoundation and @vanajourney for the invitation to touch transcendence with a reminder to focus on everyday universal human values: compassion, kindness, humility and love 🙏🏼 #RevivingIndianWisdomforContemporaryTimes
Never without my @canadagoose on this trip to Toronto. Peeking from the closet in my green room…thrown across my lap…lying on the chair opposite me during dinner. Wherever I go, my parka’s not far behind, because, well 🙄 #frozen

This is the incredibly moving, poetic book charged with rhythm and emotion that I choose to defend as the ‘One book to move You’ for @cbcbooks #canadareads2019. #Brother by David Chariandy is set in a working class neighbourhood of Scarborough in the 90s. It takes us through the universal experience of loss by way of a coming of age story of two brothers of Trinidadian origins. This book is a ballad. It is NOW. It addresses ideas of kinship, class, race, striving hopes and senseless tragedy. It is a contemporary OPERA set in one of Canada’s most disparaged neighbourhoods. Brother will linger long after you finish, move you to examine your own prejudices and perceptions, force you to look beyond the headlines and make you question your own idea of what is valour and heroism. And reconciliation. How we heal from grief is both a very specific and yet very universal experience.
The debates will air from March 25-28th on @cbc and I’m happy to share my fellow panelists (@mrjoezee @chuckcomeau @yanic_truesdale and #ZiyaTong) are all incredible individuals with distinct achievements and life experiences. It was a privilege to meet them and hang together (though I’ve been struggling with maj jet lag!) CBC Toronto
I’ll be back in March to TO for @cbcbooks #CanadaReads. Generously gifted, I’m already diving into my author #DavidChariandy’s newest book ‘I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You’ a letter to his daughter on how to negotiate bigotry and cultivate a proud sense of identity and ancestry, in a world rife with hate politics. Essential reading for me, as mama to Canadian #futureisfemale twins, who are growing up in Hong Kong, deeply connected to India and Lebanon.

End of a rather hectic but satisfying day.

A snow-magedden in #Toronto as my agent @barb_godfrey put it over soup @obcanteen while we laughed and lingered, reluctant to brave the winds. Arrived back at my hotel, face raw as tartar.
Dadu takes the girls for a walk on a fine day. What can I say about my baba that is not obvious about his spirit and youthful attitude by his gait at 86. I am surrounded by the brightest heroes 🙏🏼 Discovery Bay
