It was a typical Jamaican Summer day in the 90’s, and we were playing outdoor on my Nana’s farm, wondering through the high bushes in search of adventure. There was this beautiful black bull that we would always tease from afar, even though we knew better. On this day, we decided to enter its territory, unaware that he hadn’t been properly secured after grazing. We threw a few stones at him, and ran around his playground making fun. He observed us intently for a few moments before he gave chase and I fell trying to get away. Ingemar was a clear distance ahead, but he turned back to pick me up and distract the bull while I ran to safety. Fearless and confident, he danced with the beautiful beast, then skillfully scaled the fence. We laughed until tears fell from our happy eyes as we cleaned thorns from our shorts and wiped blood from scars… another successful adventure on the battlefield. A favourite memory, one of many. At the top of the pyramid there was no peak, only a flat platform where we all stood equally overlooking the valley below, reflecting on how many steps it took to get here. We all came from different places and arrived at different paces. Tourists, locals, young people, old people, newborns, even the sick and ailing. It was an honour to be invited by the Hon. Samia Nkrumah to share our new short film ‘Awaking Sankofa’ with leaders, activists, repatriates and young people from across Africa and the diaspora at the 60th anniversary of the 1st All African People’s Conference in Accra, Ghana yesterday. Conversation around the image and identity of our evolving ‘African personality’ are super important to continue to feed this African Renaissance. There has been 400 years of separation and misunderstandings between us. More intimate time should be spent engaging each other, learning together, healing together. We must become larger in outlook, more critical about where we contribute our time and focus, and how we can use our platform today to fulfill the works we profess to be about. Art is an investigation into the histories that we find ourselves to be a part of. It is an experiment with life and the dimensions that we exist on. A manifestation of generations of emotions steeped in realities, philosophies and opinions of revolution that now live as poetry, film, painting, dance, photography, theater, sculpting, music, food, fashion, language, spirituality… A rebellion rooted in a re-definition of freedom. April 30, 2019 will mark one year since @komiolaf @directedbykells and I were detained by police in Rialto, California after an elderly white woman called 911 claiming she saw three black people ‘stealing stuff’. The police responded with 7 police cars and a helicopter en route. This racially motivated incident inspired us to combine our skills in writing, directing, acting, comeunity organizing and visual art to form We Have The Right to Be Right, an artist collective and global campaign with the intention of generating content that gives emotional insight and helps to raise cultural sensitivity around ‘living while black’ in the 21st century.
WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE RIGHT now presents a collection of short films and insightful commentary about the experiences of African Descendants living in the diaspora. Featured films include Awaking Sankofa, Haven, Marathon and Black Bodies.
