‘All my learnings have led me to write my upcoming book, Close to the Bone, which I’ve been working on for the last two years. It’s not just a memoir; it’s my first project as a writer. And honestly, all these labels of being an actor, a model, an entrepreneur, pale in comparison to writing. Writing has always been my first love, and people close to me recognise that…..The memoir takes into account all of my experiences up till my wedding. I hope that I am serving others through my words and candid tone—considering I had to fight very hard to tell my story the way that I wanted to. Writing about my personal journey made me realise that us women have to fight in every moment of life, especially when we need to be heard in a way that is meaningful to us. Finding meaning in every moment and transcending labels is challenging work—and that’s what Close to the Bone aims to do.’ Excerpted from an interview with @vogueindia

On #WorldHealthDay I’m taking a moment to reflect on what health means to me, personally. After years of crash dieting, obsessive exercising and a constant stream of inner criticism of my body, I understand health for me is a combination of self-love, self-acceptance and using my life lessons to practise a more honest version of myself. Ok, how does that translate into a daily routine? I listen very closely to what my body says. Some days I want to go to an ashtanga class, others I want to laze on the couch. But I’ve made friends with my body. You might even say we are BFFs. We have slowly learned to trust each other- I start my day with a green smoothie but if my body really needs chocolate in the late afternoon, we sit down together and savour a few squares. No more binging and starving. So how did I clear the path for this blossoming relationship- a real love affair I might add? Nature. I connect with the deepest parts of myself in nature, while at the same time understanding there’s a bigger, invisible hand guiding us all along. Nature is my temple, my gurdwara, my church, my sanctuary. It’s the place where I can remind myself of everything that matters most. So today, take a moment to breathe and remember. Expand. But also draw the boundaries you need to protect what’s essential. Your inner calling. Your spirit. Your soul. Your chocolate stash 😜

Two years ago there was me, hubs and our first born Matteo. Now the edges of our little family have expanded to include our babies and another puppy. But it makes me feel we do a disservice to the world by reserving our love and compassion only for those closest. Love is love and has no boundaries.

As I prepare to leave for home in Asia, I’m reflecting on this past week in Toronto and the unexpectedly transformative experience of participating in @cbcbooks #CanadaReads. Much like the book I chose and was advocating for – #Brother by #DavidChariandy – I was grabbed by the hand and pulled onto an emotional roller coaster. In the process, I came to reignite my passion for words and kindness and how they can move the world! Taught me so much about myself. Refined by ability to listen, to open my mind. I also had the opportunity to fall in with an incredibly endearing, smart, compassionate, attractive bunch of people that have altered me in ways they may not be aware of: @chuckcomeau @mrjoezee @yanic_truesdale #ZiyaTong. All the action was moderated with aplomb by @standupali Thank you #TeamCanadaReads and Canada for caring so deeply in a world that needs it. I still have the jitters about the release of my upcoming book with @harpercollinsin but now I’m more fired than before with optimism for the power of books to spread compassion, erase our differences and bring us closer.
Congratulations to #Ziya for her impassioned debate skills and #MaxEisen on his winning book, an affecting memoir on the Holocaust, #ByChanceAlone
As an aside, all five books are incredibly powerful in their own way and have been at the top of the best sellers lists in Canada, which in itself is a win.
