My heaven home #Nelson. The place where I fall into grace. We can’t make a pilgrimage this year to our house in the mountains, of allowing ourselves extended time and space away for routine, but still I receive insights and spiritual growth in the act of fusing travel, destination and everyday wonder.

“We have multiple beloveds,” says poet Gregory Orr — people, creatures, and places among them. “How Beautiful the Beloved”
By Gregory Orr “How beautiful
The beloved.
Whether garbed In mortal tatters,
Or in her dress
Of everlastingness—
Moon broken
On the water,
Or moon
Still whole
In the night sky.” Image reposted from @davidabraha

This brought tears to my eyes. Thank you my sister for being by my side all these years Repost from @sujstyle using @RepostRegramApp – “Pulling a Lisa” is how I am quoted in @closetothebone.book — one of the most poignant, precise & sincere memoirs I have read.
In my 20’s, “Pulling a Lisa” meant being errant and often unreliable. Now in my 40’s “Pulling a Lisa” stands for authenticity, fearlessness, curiousity & seeking.
#CloseToTheBone takes you through @lisaraniray’s incredible life journey and also prompts you to reflect on your own journey as a woman. Yes, we all have our flaws and often it is the way you deal with these imperfections that makes you a truly beautiful person. Thank you for this reminder Lisa. #serendipity. 💛
My darling Lisa Rani your many talents continue to inspire me. Blessed to call you a friend.❤️

So…I’m down with the mumps. That’s correct. The mumps. You might have had the chipmunk swelling on both sides of your jaw as a kid. Apparently an adult has a 0.007 percent chance of contracting the mumps, so either:
1. I’m special
2. I’m burned out after my recent schedule
3. My immune system is compromised due to the maintenance therapy I’m on for Multiple Myeloma
4. My spirit needed a break and sent me a strongly worded message
5. All of the above
.
Either way, I’m on enforced bedrest and reading after months. #CelestialBodies and #GunIsland are winging their way to me and I’ve already started this vivid and compelling tale by one of my favourite authors #TashAw

It’s particularly satisfying when a wonderful woman who I intuitively know has seen and experienced parts of Bombay through similar eyes shares this. Thanks @iadhuna Repost from @iadhuna using @RepostRegramApp – @lisaraniray I finally finished reading this brave, honest, charming and witty book! I met Lisa over 20 years ago, which is why I can vouch for the fact that it is brutally honest. We had instantly connected, due to Bengali genes and a serious case of ‘not really knowing where we belonged’. “Children of immigrants, looking for something more than the obvious”. The #mumbai chapters of #closetothebone resonated with me so much because I’ve often had moments here, when I felt like ‘this stuff needs to be written down… it’s book worthy’ and Lisa has captured those perfectly. #mustread #harpercollins

Because now I’m asked, here’s another book that slit me open, straight down the middle. Yes, it’s a memoir but I was drawn to it’s allure, prose, devastation and hope despite it. One of my all time favourite reads.
.
Tara Westover* was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father’s junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when Tara’s older brother became violent. Then, lacking a formal education, Tara began to educate herself. She taught herself enough mathematics and grammar to be admitted to Brigham Young University, where she studied history, learning for the first time about important world events like the Holocaust and the civil rights movement. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.

Repost from @fitish_over_40 using @RepostRegramApp – As school comes to a close for the summer, I’m getting my reading list together. @lisaraniray ‘s Close to the Bone is number one on that list. This exotic actress I first saw in the movie Bollywood Hollywood always intrigued me. Being a Toronto native, the south Asian looking girl with the mysterious green eyes is an enigma to me. There was always something behind those eyes that I could never quite define. Not bold, yet neither timid. A calm confidence? From Bollywood Hollywood to Water there was always mystery around her work in film. She revealed just a little of herself, but always left me wanting more. From her journey as an actress, model, mother through surrogacy, battle with a rare form of cancer and now an accomplished writer I hope that “more” is exposed to me this summer. What will you be reading this summer? #summerreads #poolsidereading #LisaRay #water #Torontoartists #CookingwithStella #bollywoodhollywood #survivor

So grateful #ClosetotheBone is featured here and I’m moved by such a canny review: like the lid of my skull has been neatly flipped open and the contents emptied into this post 😊 Thank you! Repost from @thelabellife using @RepostRegramApp – #TheLabelBookClub: Close to the Bone by @lisaraniray is not what you would expect, as a memoir of THE 90s pin-up girl you would expect a name-dropping litany to Bollywood. However, it is something much more powerful and intimate, a fitting example of the old adage ‘don’t judge a book by it’s cover’. The book is a rare look into the tumultuous mind of a 17 year old overnight success, a shy-introverted-rebel at heart, whose life has always been a double-edged sword. Lisa’s success came with a caveat, be loved by the world but face horrific personal struggles simultaneously; become a sensation in India but have your mother paralysed in an accident, be at the pinnacle of her profession while suffering bulimia.
Or so she thought, till she realised that this ‘splintering of self’ into the Lisa-the-model, Lisa-the-cancer-survivor, Lisa-the-lover is self inflicted. A failure to face emotions, accept yourself, and accept love led to a denial that spanned decades and was painfully reconciled after many moons.
It is not easy to peel your layers & it is unbelievably hard to work on yourself constantly, to make yourself a happier human. To see this never-ending process illuminated in an honest and delightfully conspiratorial way in @closetothebone.book inspires us to take that one step. To follow our hunches, be at peace with our choices & always stay hopeful about the future.

Because I am now asked, I want to share some of the books that embody a bridge for me into another, that have inspired and elevated me. First is an extraordinary memoir ‘Blood, Bones and Butter’ by renowned Chef Gabrielle Hamilton of #Prune that taught me the fruitfulness of owning every piece of your past and convinced me the heart of relationships is surrounded by a meal. Lyrical yet real.
