it’s been 8 months since I embarked on this rollercoaster and there is no better time than now to talk about how truly grateful I am for all the joy that our little one has brought into our lives…motherhood like all else hasn’t been easy… the sleepless nights, the feeling like a food source ,the blues are all a part of this wonderful package. Its amazing how the mommy brain can do so many things at the same time and works on autopilot …like resting the baby’s head jus right , knowing when she is done with her feed and ofcourse becoming the burping expert of the world . I breastfed 🤱 Mehr exclusively for 6 months and still continue to do so … It truly made me realise the value of a wonderful support system that I have and sometimes the lack of it and also the lack of facilities . Like once I was on a plane and had to feed her , and I literally had to take her to the washroom and was only hoping that the seat belt sign does nt come on before she is done …of course I came out n apologised for using the washroom for so long… now here’s the real deal … I honestly don’t understand the consciousness behind doing something so right n so beautiful. Im also super grateful for all the amazing people in my life for making this journey easier but the truth is I know I’m not alone in feeling that there has to be a slight shift in our mentalities, in the fact that we need more facilities for breast feeding moms with their babies or even their breast pumps …and the only way this can happen is if we start a conversation… I want to encourage moms like you and me whether breast feeding or not , to share their story … tag me @nehadhupia and use the hashtag #freedomtofeed 🤱and I promise to share story with my little world. 💕 … @freedomtofeed

It’s #worldbreastfeedingweek and I’m so glad to even share my journey! .
.
My breast feeding journey has been a super long, tough, exhausting, calming and crazy all together. .
With four kids.. giving into each ones special needs, all my experiences were different. 11 years ago. Breast feeding almost felt like taboo. I remember sitting and feeding my baby anywhere and had people stare at me if I did that in public. Why are we ashamed to feed our own child?? Why do people look at us with such shock? .
.
11 years and 4 babies later, things have progressed. Which I’m happy about for us moms. To even voice and have an opinion about it and have a platform like this to talk about. .thankyou @nehadhupia @freedomtofeed for raising such a platform!! .
I remember with each baby. After my 4th c-section and the post traumatic pain I went through I have slept in hospital beds where I literally lay in exhaustion and the nurses have come every two hourly to feed the baby because I dint have the strength to even sit up and feed. Felt like a cow! But just the feel and touch of my baby on me was enough to pull through each day. .
.
Breast feeding is honestly one of the best bonds you could have with your child. I always remember my husband @hirenkakad asking me. What does it feel like?? In amazement. And I’d say it’s magical. The very fact that you’re the only source of nutrition for your baby. Raises the bar for every mother out there. .
.

I believe in #freedomtofeed 👼🏻🤱 a super initiative started by @nehadhupia ❤️ I fully support you and your cause! @freedomtofeed 👍🏻 As mothers let’s talk about it.. I’m told it’s international breast feeding week so it’s an apt time to talk about it. Every woman has her own experience about it and it takes a lot from each one of us who has done it but what stands true for each woman is that how important it is for her child. Some women take to it naturally and some really have to struggle with it and then feel depressed about the fact that something that’s so natural to others and something that looks so simple in movies is not so for her, these are all notions a new mother goes thru and as a society instead of making this time easy for her you still look down upon feeding in public. It’s every woman’s right to do so and if you have a problem with that stay home! We live in a country where it’s ok for a man to pee standing anywhere on d road but not ok for a mother to feed a hungry child who’s completely dependent on her. There are not a lot of places where one can feed a child because we don’t think there’s a need or it’s important . Facility provided or not as a mother you won’t leave your child hungry coz there are some sick prying eyes looking at you doing so. Change your prospective .Educate yourself for a better and a healthier future.

There is way too much pressure on mothers- a lot of it stemming from self imposed guilt but all of it made worse by the incessant chatter of a million judgemental know-it-all voices . I normally don’t take to social media to discuss this stuff but when @nehadhupia chatted with me about a cause that was close to her heart , that of #freedomtofeed , it got me thinking about how breastfeeding has become an issue that so many grapple with . Then to complicate that further with people telling you how to do it ,where to do it ,how much to do it , and all the while telling you to relax (irony at its cruelest! ) What’s needed is just unconditional support , empathy and the freedom to just be , to make your own choice .
To feed when you want, where you want and how you want . I reached out to @sakpataudi who was a rock for me when I was floundering about initially – who said it’s going to be ok ,just do what’s right for you .So find your sensible friends and remember it’s all life , all natural ,not rocket science , just find your own rhythm .

When Kabir was born, the one thing I was certain of was that I would want to breastfeed my baby. On our second day in the hospital when the doctor prescribed formula I was heartbroken. Not that there is anything wrong with giving your child formula but I really wanted to feed him my milk. This was just one bump in our journey which went on for two years of exclusively breastfeeding him. Thanks to my husband @pk100480 support, I never felt like I had to stay locked up inside and couldn’t do what I wanted because I wouldn’t be able to feed Kabir. I would put on my feeding cape and like a Superhero I would carry on with my agenda. It also helped having new mom’s around me for support, but there were many who didn’t understand why I insisted on feeding my child. I heard things like – oh he’s not getting nourishment, he will become clingy and needy etc etc. Sadly in our country the lack of amenities and facilities decides where you can take your child comfortably or not. Forget feeding rooms, most public places ; even the biggest Toy store chain; don’t have a changing table. I’m glad people like @nehadhupia are starting the dialogue #FreedomToFeed in mainstream media. #lilkabir #breastfeedingmom #mybodymychoice #goldenliquid

My breastfeeding journey with Norah was a very difficult one. Post the diagnosis I took it upon myself that I had to find a way to connect with her and breastfeeding being the most sacred bond that can exist between a mother and a child, felt the most natural way to connect with Norah.
.
Due to low muscle tone Norah found it difficult to latch and my incapacity to be comfortable around her too didn’t make it easy for her.I was trying really hard to connect with her. I was trying really hard not to see the diagnosis but that’s all I saw.Norah not being able to latch made me feel like I was failing as a mom already. She wasn’t bonding with me either just like I wasn’t connecting with her. All this was in my head clearly,I know that now but I couldn’t think rationally then.
.
I was talking to other moms who were successfully breastfeeding their infants with Down Syndrome and enjoying bonding with their kids. That made me feel incompetent that Norah doesn’t love me and she can sense me not able to love her right now. She can see me fail as a mom. .
@greenmomsindia helped me immensely then. For 8.5 months Dr.Mugdha helped me with Norah because for 8.5 months I didn’t give up on trying to Breastfeed Norah. Every single day, every single feed I would sit to breast feed and fail. .
I would pump 8 times a day because I wanted to exclusively give her Breast milk only to help her build her immunity. In between the pumping sessions I would try to get Norah to latch as well and fail everytime.
.
Just when we were close to achieving this milestone,Norah aspirated- milk in her lungs while she tried to breastfeed!! Another failure!! .
Time and again I failed but I never gave up, I was able to successfully breastfeed Norah for a few days before she aspirated. That joy of achieving that with Norah was bigger than all the struggles I had for 8.5 months.
.
I cherish those few days the most, because I chose to feed!! .
This maynot be a path that I am saying needs to be taken by everyone because this is

My journey with breastfeeding seems so long ago however there are parts of my early days of motherhood that have left some truly lasting impressions.
.
I have suffered Severe Post Partum Depression for almost 2.5 years after childbirth, which adversely impacted my ability to feed my child and not seeking clinical help made things worse and prolonged. I am lucky to be married to an amazing spouse @abajla who suffered yet stood with me through it all, a family that loved me unconditionally and friends who left no stone unturned to bring back my spark. Post Partum depression is for real mommies and there is a big beautiful life ahead and beyond it. You are not alone and talking about it and seeking professional help will only hasten the healing.
.
A big thank you to the lovely @nehadhupia for this initiative and encouraging me to talk about it at the onset of International Breast Feeding week. Like I always say, bring back your happy cause HAPPY moms make the BEST moms! .
Truly grateful for this wonderful gift of motherhood.

It’s lunch time Momma, quit posing for pictures!!! •
Breastfeeding memories surfacing thanks to the ongoing #worldbreastfeedingweek. •
We have been speaking at @Momspresso about how the responsibility to support breastfeeding mothers lies with all of us and all that is needed is some respect and consideration, a helpful hand and simple facilities like Breastfeeding rooms. It is heartening to see the cause being taken up by celebrities like @nehadhupia , a new mum herself, through her initiative #freedomtofeed. •
I have nursed my babies in all kinds of public places, but always felt some amount of awkwardness. The weirdest was in a movie hall – we had to take her with us that evening, there was no choice. But when the time came to feed, she couldn’t find me in the dark and I couldn’t get her to latch on properly…and she was bawling. People were staring at us, of course and finally we had to switch on the flashlight on the phone to get both of us to ‘find each other’. So if we were not attracting enough attention before, think of what happened with a spotlight!! Can’t forget that day – I even remember the movie – Main Hoon Na 😄

International Breastfeeding Week Started August 1st and I am so happy @nehadhupia asked me to share my experience with everyone. My son is now 10 but I still remember all the feeding drama like it was yesterday. My little one who isn’t so little anymore was born in NYC at a hospital which had literally just turned Breastfeeding Friendly that year !! The staff was still learning to adapt to the importance of it and my little one who was 9.5 pounds and born over term and after a C section was crying away for feeds while in the nursery and they started giving him formula without even asking us. That led to him not being able to adapt to natural feeding as he got used to the bottle. What followed were weeks of heartache for me but I pushed thru and did my best. I’m so grateful to see that the world has woken up to the importance of this !! We should all have the #freedomtofeed and be able to give women who are nursing the space and opportunity to do so with love. Thank you again @freedomtofeed for this initiative.

Breastfeeding mommies need safe, secure and hygeinic spaces in which to feed their babies or express their milk with dignity. Let’s help work, public and personal spaces get more breastfeeding-friendly, spread the word that breastfeeding is good and desirable critical to raise healthy kids and healthy people, lets not make lactating mothers embarrassed or awkward, celebrate and enable them!
