Thank you @theshilpashetty for setting an example again this year, with your beautiful Green Ganesha! The care, love and wisdom with which you celebrate #GaneshChaturti always makes our Darshan so beautiful 🙏🏻💚 #GanpatiBappaMorya
Ganpati Bappa Morya!
Traditionally we made clay idols and then immersed them in water to denote the Birth Cycle of Lord Ganesha/Ganpati who was created from Clay/Earth.
Visarjan in its own way talks about nature’s life cycle and while it should be one of the most Eco friendly events in India, it has become something else all together.
Clay Handmade Idols have been replaced with Plaster of Paris and Plastic. Natural brown colour of clay is replaced by toxic paints to make idols shiny and sparkly. Size plays a big role on asserting importance or power of the celebration. “Mine is bigger than yours syndrome!” And then there are those awful unnatural plastic/thermocole decorations! All this is immersed in our seas/rivers/ponds/lakes without caring about the consequences.
The consequences are dangerous, a complete contamination of our waters, soil and food chain. Surely Ganpati Bappa would never want to be responsible for harming that what he was born from?
This Ganpati Visarjan, take this as an opportunity to understand the meaning of a birth cycle, go minimal, natural and sustainable 💚🙏🏻 #BeatPlasticPollution #SayNoToSingleUsePlastic #GreenGanesha #EcoCelebrations #EarthFriendlyFestivals #GanpatiBappaMorya

• 500 billion plastic bags are used each year
• 13 million tonnes of plastic leak into the ocean each
year
• 17 million barrels of oil used on plastic production each year
• 1 million plastic bottles bought every minute (90% are not recycled)
• 100,000 marine animals killed by plastics each year
• 100 years for plastic to degrade in the environment
• 90% of bottled water found to contain plastic particles
• 83% of tap water found to contain plastic particles
• 50% of consumer plastics are single use
• 10% of all human-generated waste is plastic
Solid waste management is everyone’s business. Ensuring effective and proper solid waste management is critical to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Our plastic waste left unmanaged, dumped or burned, harms human health, hurts the environment and climate and hinders economic growth.
We can #ActNow and insist our governments implement ‘Extended Producers Responsibility’ and improve waste management systems.
We cannot and must allow there to be more plastic than fish in our seas by 2050! We cannot and must not forget that our oceans are our planets lungs, regulating our climate and sustaining our lives.

Soon the festive ‘Ganesh Utsav’ will commence in Maharashtra… a time we celebrate our #Elephant God #GanpatiBappa. No better way than to recognise that the remover of obstacles, the God of wisdom, knowledge and luck would never want for us to pollute our waters, our food chain, our soil with idols made of Plaster of Paris and toxic paints. We are a culture and civilisation that has always revered and worshipped nature, this Ganesh Utsav bring home a #GreenGanesha 🙏🏻💚 @bigfmindia @treeganesha

India is a blessed land. Fertile soils. Warm climate. Productive seas. Living rivers. We are the children of the Ganga, and our civilisation is a result of plenty of such mighty rivers such as the Indus, Narmada, Chambal, Kaveri, Krishna, and Godavari… they are too numerous to list… and how can we forget the Brahmaputra, the only ‘male’ river in India. Together these rivers and the glaciers and forests where they originate have fed and nurtured our people. Is desh ke vasi yugon se yehi mante gaye hain, ki Jungle Nadi Ki Maa hain.
That is why we worship nature and that is why we respect all living creatures as our annadatas… our brothers and sisters.
Let me put it this way… India is a beautiful country fed by nature AND by her rivers… rivers that are our providers. As a civilisation through the ages we have learned how to nurture and turn the magic of nature into sustenance for us and our children. We all know the value of water. There can be no life, no health therefore no prosperity without potable drinking water. All those deprived of access to clean drinking water, especially women and children that walk miles to access water deserve a commitment on our part to ensure they have access to potable water, that we will not axe down the very forests that are the birthing grounds of our rivers, that we will not contaminate, pollute and wage war against our LIFE BLOOD our rivers.
That we will stand united to secure our forests because without our forests we have nothing. #BetterWithForests #SDGs #CleanAir #ClimateAction #ActNow

40% of our country’s population will have no access to water by 2020. That’s next year. Another reason why we MUST protect our Tigers. What do #Tigers have to do with #Water you ask?
Well, everything! पत्तेदार पानी का देवता। Tigers have been long worshiped by forest dwelling communities because they recognise that Tiger Forests are providers of water.
A good way to understand this better might be to listen in to what over one million #KidsforTigers children, who have found a connection with nature, all across the nation know, almost by heart: “You cannot save the tiger without saving its diverse forests. This ends up saving the entire gamut of biodiversity ranging from termites and turtles, to butterflies and bears. In the process we end up saving the source of pure water supply to over 600 Indian rivers. There is more. Wild ecosystems can only be regenerated and flourish by ‘stealing’ carbon dioxide from the air, which happens to be our best hope to counter the worst impacts of climate change.” Put another way, saving tigers ends up saving humans… our health, our economy, our lives are connected to the #Tiger.

The total land area of India is about 3.28 million Sq. Km. So, India accounts for about 2.4% of the total land area on Earth. Seems pretty crazy to imagine how more than 17% of the world’s population lives in just 2.4% of this total land area on Earth!
India also shares this space with 50% of Worlds Asian Elephants, 70% of the worlds Lion population, 70% of the worlds Tiger population and 90% of the worlds One Horned Rhino population.
Just 21% of India’s landmass is forest cover and less than 5% is dense forest.
These forests feed India’s rivers, manage fragile ecosystems and regulate our climate.
#RightOfPassage is an important initiative to link our forests that have been fragmented by urban development. Roads, highways, railways, mines and other human activities have fragmented what once were dense connected forests.
Why do our forests need to be connected? Why do we need to ensure our #WildLife has #RightOfPassage?
Because #Elephants and #Tigers and all #WildLife that are a part of these forests keep our forests ALIVE. Protecting and securing their Right of Passage means protecting India’s carbon sinks, its sources of clean air and freshwater — which are essential to our nation’s future, our health, opportunity and SURVIVAL.

What can we do? A question that haunts many of us confronted by the reality of climate change and environmental degradation.
The answer is simple. Each of us can contribute towards improving the state of the environment by adopting lifestyle changes.
This photoshoot, as a first of its kind, is a confluence of beliefs, craft and activism.
Rohan @rohanshrestha has used his craft to capture some of the images captured by me and @wildlifetrustofindia – WildLife Trust Of India to highlight some of the most important issues of our time.
This image draws our attention to the campaign #BreatheLife – #CleanAir! The image projecting on me is one I took while on my trip to #HimachalPradesh. The #BluesSkies represent the quality of #CleanAir. 14 of the 20 most polluted cities of the world are in India. This must change! Our right to life is underlined by our ability to breathe clean air.
How can we hope for cleaner air? We need to switch to clean energy, stop burning waste, ensure polluting industries follow all environmental guidelines strictly, improve urban green cover, grow trees… But one of the things we can easily do at an individual level is to reduce our consumption of plastic. #CleanAir is linked to #BeatPlasticPollution a campaign that has raised the question on why ‘Extended Producers Responsibility’ and ‘Waste Management’ are NOT one of the most urgent policies of implementation?
India has made a commitment to make itself #SingleUsePlastics free by the year 2022. Following up on this commitment made during World Environment Day, on this #IndependenceDay our PM @narendramodi called on the nation to discontinue the use of #SingleUsePlastics!
By means of many beach cleanups, mountain cleanups, citizen action has propelled governments into action. A lot more still needs to be done. And that change starts at an individual level- by carrying my own metal bottle, refusing plastic bags, refusing plastic crockery and cutlery, refusing packaged fruits and vegetables, refusing plastic straws and segregation and composting of waste at home.
