“Self-care is often a very unbeautiful thing.
It is making a spreadsheet of your debt and enforcing a morning routine and cooking yourself healthy meals and no longer just running from your problems and calling the distraction a solution.
It is often doing the ugliest thing that you have to do, like sweat through another workout or tell a toxic friend you don’t want to see them anymore or get a second job so you can have a savings account or figure out a way to accept yourself so that you’re not constantly exhausted from trying to be everything, all the time and then needing to take deliberate, mandated breaks from living to do basic things like drop some oil into a bath and read Marie Claire and turn your phone off for the day.
A world in which self-care has to be such a trendy topic is a world that is sick. Self-care should not be something we resort to because we are so absolutely exhausted that we need some reprieve from our own relentless internal pressure.
True self-care is not salt baths and chocolate cake, it is making the choice to build a life you don’t need to regularly escape from.
And that often takes doing the thing you least want to do.
It often means looking your failures and disappointments square in the eye and re-strategizing. It is not satiating your immediate desires. It is letting go. It is choosing new. It is disappointing some people. It is making sacrifices for others. It is living a way that other people won’t, so maybe you can live in a way that other people can’t.
It is letting yourself be normal. Regular. Unexceptional. It is sometimes having a dirty kitchen and deciding your ultimate goal in life isn’t going to be having abs and keeping up with your fake friends. It is deciding how much of your anxiety comes from not actualizing your latent potential, and how much comes from the way you were being trained to think before you even knew what was happening.
If you find yourself having to regularly indulge in consumer self-care, it’s because you are disconnected from actual self-care, which has very little to do with “treating yourself” and a whole lot do with parenting yourself and making choices for your long-term wellness.’

Eleven years ago, Anjali Kulthe was working in the ante-natal care ward looking after 20 pregnant women when two terrorists entered the hospital. The courageous nurse not only saved lives but also identified and testified against terrorist Ajmal Kasab.

Mourning @subbu28 by sharing a moment of lightness during a #LakmeShoot with @farrokhchothia sometime in the late 90s.
I worked with this incredibly talented makeup artist right at the beginning of his career, and as a natural introvert myself I was drawn to his gentle nature. In an industry of loud personalities and hyperbole, he was always the quiet, composed presence on set – yet poised for sudden spurts of hilarity. Enough cannot be written about his eye-kissing light touch with makeup, his pioneering professional attitude and his sweetness of being. I saw him at Mehboob studio a few weeks ago and we shared the warmest hug, for which I’m grateful. I cannot fathom this as a lost battle: Subbu touched so many of our lives and now he’s butterflying his way onwards.

I often refer to my personal journey to self-care, self-acceptance and radical compassion and while it might sound abstract, here is a picture of self-love in action. This retreat led by dharma princess @mishtickle broke down the everyday edifice of urban living so I could feel connected with my humanity, in all its softness, terror and joy – and with this wondrous sangha, surrounded by lake, green and the sound of wind parting the corridors of my mind. 🙏🏼 .

4 days together in the lap of love, nature, magic and stillness. We had designated times for silence, solitude and meditation. There were also times for nature, immersion, deep sharing and fun!
Here is to many more conscious gatherings together.

I was awed tonight @wethewomenasia by the diversity of strong female voices represented. Mine is no more important than any other, but together we are a flood, covering a thirsty landscape that needs a female-centric perspective. I love you #India, but you need to listen, deeply to your women.
I was simply in thrall of my gracious, articulate and beautiful co-panelists @iamsonalibendre and @tahirakashyap and learned so much from them even in our brief time on stage. (I would have loved to just listen- I am honestly a bit tired and burned out from a hectic month of lit fests)
And @barkha.dutt thank you, thank you. You are a force and a beacon and as an aside – I want to turn the tables and interview you one day. So much to learn from and share.
Very special shoutout to my love @anaitashroffadajania for just being a catalyst of love; imbuing meaning and authentic emotion into fabulous clothes and the fashion biz.

Repost from @ezarawrites using @RepostRegramApp – Like so many of you, I’ve been following Vietnamese-American @ocean_vuong ‘s work for some time, ever since he was first recognised (somewhat obsessively) by America as this burning poetic talent. I wasn’t sure I was going to read this, then @lisaraniray said, “It’s stunning but at times so intense I have to put it aside…” That interested me. Later when I was in the middle of it, and putting it down from time to time, she said this – “It just ripped into my marrow, some passages, I feel the need to forget.” Yes. But you won’t be able to. The book is one long letter from Little Dog (presumably Ocean himself) to his all but illiterate mother. This is a new immigrant story, it is a war story, it is a gay story, this is a new genre altogether – blending autobiography with poetry with novel. A soul searching/ journey-of-the-self novel that hurts and hurts. And then through the pain something is birthed, something is freed. It is continuously shocking that Vuong is as young as he is. Roxane Gay’s review of the book said two things I agree with so will include them here – “He writes sex better than almost anyone out there,” and “As I got deeper into the novel I kept wanting a clearer sense of where the story was going.” That said, I would still give it a 5/5.
