My tender hearted friend @the_happy_meditator – who I met on a retreat led by the high mistress of metta and the dharma @mishtickle – posted this from @brain.pickings and it pried me open, rib by rib, to the truest and highest calling.

I feel horrified and helpless at the same time. Anger, outrage, disbelief, fear – it’s an unending stream of emotion. There’s also some guilt that I’m not doing enough to help solve the problem. In fact, I don’t know what to do at all. Do you?
We’re all just sitting around hoping we’re not next. My heart goes out to Priyanka’s family and their unimaginable pain. It’s so awful that when her parents went to the police station they were greeted with nothing but apathy. I struggled with posting anything at all because how many times can I say #EnoughIsEnough when I know in my heart nothing will change until there is some significant edit to our justice system. Where do we begin to demand and enforce that? Does anybody know? I’m sorry Priyanka, it isn’t fair. It could have been #metoo.

I was awed tonight @wethewomenasia by the diversity of strong female voices represented. Mine is no more important than any other, but together we are a flood, covering a thirsty landscape that needs a female-centric perspective. I love you #India, but you need to listen, deeply to your women.
I was simply in thrall of my articulate and beautiful co-panelists @iamsonalibendre and @tahirakashyap and learned so much from them even in our brief time on stage. (I would have loved to just listen- I am honestly a bit tired and burned out from a hectic month of lit fests)
And @barkha.dutt thank you, thank you. You are a force and a beacon and as an aside – I want to turn the tables and interview you one day. So much to learn from and share.

We’re born into a certain family, nation, class. But if we have no connection whatsoever with the worlds beyond the one we take for granted, then we run the risk of drying up inside. Our imagination might shrink; our hearts might dwindle, and our humanness might wither away if we stay for too long inside our cultural cocoons. Our friends, neighbors, colleagues, relatives — if all the people in our inner circle resemble us, it means we are surrounded with our mirror image. We tend to form clusters based on similarity or sameness, and then we produce stereotypes about other clusters of people. In my opinion, one way of transcending these cultural ghettos is through the art of storytelling. Stories cannot fully demolish frontiers, but they can punch holes in our mental walls. And through these holes we can get a glimpse of “the Other” and sometimes even like what we see.📚📚📚 hepimiz sosyal ve kültürel bir çemberin içinde yaşıyoruz.
