Crazy kids on the loose in #Sg. I’m sure there’s a sane balance between freedom for my little wolverines to let their little hands and feet roam where they may and, well, discipline. Haven’t figured out that balance yet. Pray for me.
My supernovas in @mikololoworld
Pictured @jaipurlitfest with my dear friend @nishajamvwal, a deeply original spirit in a world that tries to codify behaviour and the extraordinary Sharon Lowen, celebrated Odissi/Manipuri dancer, writer and artist whose identity transcends many perceptions and borders. She also happens to be the mother of my friend @punjewbi
Each of us wryly indefinable, stealthily uncontainable, status quo resistant and label-proof.
“Later, in the moonlit whirl of celebration, I found myself thinking about the importance of storytelling, about the stories that become anchors of faith, that support us and carry us both when we are lost and when we have found meaning. What do we do in the face of life’s biggest upheavals and triumphs but make up stories? It’s the way of our nature and it’s the way of metamorphosis. Spinning gold out of the dark.”

I found the thoughts below very powerful. Please understand, I’m using this particular photo to frame a point in our collective history that has reached a three bell alarm red alert. I’m NOT ASSIGNING BLAME. People are people: we react when feeling threatened, we soften with a show of compassion and an unbiased open, deep listening. This way of reframing the current political landscape is uncomfortable and mildly threatening because this perspective shifts the narrative in the direction of personal responsibility: reflection instead of reaction. What constitutes real, lasting change? India needs to look deep within its collective and individual soul 🙏🏼

We didn’t lose our love for each other under this government. We’ve despised each other for as long as we’ve been around. You might think that surely, there were moments of national unity in our history when we were able to put our differences aside, and then you’ll remember that not only were those outliers, those were also a convenient narrative at the time, that many swallowed like a bitter pill. And this isn’t just about religious differences. Minorities have that label because they’re othered. Sure there are stretches of time when not too much untoward happens, but that’s because of this tight rope we’ve been walking, bounded by law & order, with the carrot of economic progress dangling in front of us.
This government has slackened that rope completely, and amplified many of those differences, but let’s not credit them with an infinite power.
The ones that hold infinite power are us, as people, in our ability to fully see each other, and to find more in our humanity that connects us than separates. We need to bring this power back. It has to happen without the government, and without media. In fact, even without social media. It has to happen on the street. It has to happen in places of worship. It has to happen where we make a living. Where we worry or exult about our circumstances,, together. I’m leaning towards leaving FB for a while, but I worry that it’s selfish. I need to be where the hate is. That’s where the change needs to happen, not in my echo chambers.
Adios Mumbai! We’re moving to Singapore. The world moves on, another day, another news report, another creak of the karmic wheel. Keep your spirit pure. Reveal the grain when necessary. Be kind even when you feel resistance. Protect your heart and imagination. I’ll be back for a visit soon. Oh, and keep the pickle jar unscrewed for me.
Cooking up something for your listening pleasure. A head cold, eye infection, sick babies, the steady creep of fascism and global contagion aaaand our impending move to Singapore has not compromised this exciting project.
Stay tuned

Three years ago. Precious teachings. A precious moment. Deep bows to the universe.

In the process of absorbing three days of teachings on ‘Reviving Indian Wisdom for Contemporary India’ by H.H.D.L. at the inaugural event facilitated by #Vidyaloke and the #Vanafoundation
Overwhelming to be at the receiving end of so much wisdom and good humour in the company of other like minded shishyas.
Numerous take aways to share, but for the moment it’s H.H. childlike giggle that echos in my memory.
This has been of the most precious exchanges of my life.
Thank you @vidyaloke for facilitating these teachings I will reflect on, cherish and attempt to put into practise.
Each of us is the key to peace and we can choose humanity and compassion every day.
Special thanks to my soul sister @freidapinto

My didi Devyani posted this and I can’t help add a reflection on this evening from my book #ClosetotheBone:
‘This ascension of celebrity epitomized by the Oscars – to come from obscurity and become globally celebrated – was the taste of omnipotence. Was I in this private club, drinking in the ferocious showmanship in swigs? Or split from the pack, taking it in from the sidelines, wide-eyed with disbelief? I had always kept room in my heart for the unimaginable. But entering the Kodak Theatre, the air crackling with influence and power, I felt pulled off balance as if by a tailwind.’

Repost from @shiloshivsuleman using @RepostRegramApp – Main Shaheen Hoon. The Shaheen is a majestic falcon that flies so high above the rest that no other bird can make it prey. We painted on the main stage at Shaheen bagh on the eve of Republic Day, in what felt like an alternate rose coloured universe. Women gathered together there – yes caring for each other, but also getting deep into political ideology, writing futures and occupying space.
My grandfather was six years old during the independence movement and he remembered (hazelike) a talk that gandhi gave. As these young fires have been coming with their mothers for the last month, I wonder what memories they will pass on to their grand daughters.
I know for certain- all futures exist because they turned up today. We’re writing history.
I know where god lives.

The English language is a magnificent sponge. I love the English language. I’m glad that I speak it. But for all that, it has a lot of holes.
In Greek, there’s a word, “lachesism” which is the hunger for disaster. You know, when you see a thunderstorm on the horizon and you just find yourself rooting for the storm. In Mandarin, they have a word “yù yī” — I’m not pronouncing that correctly — which means the longing to feel intensely again the way you did when you were a kid. In Polish, they have a word “jouska” which is the kind of hypothetical conversation that you compulsively play out in your head.
And finally, in German, of course in German, they have a word called “zielschmerz” which is the dread of getting what you want. ~ John Koenig
Thanks to Sonu for lending me her copy of this essential read. We seem to have landed in a heart full community of readers here in #Singapore. (Thank god no interest in B-wood either 🙄)

Repost from @daakvaak using @RepostRegramApp – Photos from the death and funeral of Gandhi by Henri Cartier-Bresson.
On 30th January, 1948 Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated. His assasin is known to have said that he took the extreme step because, “Gandhi had betrayed his Hindu religion and culture by supporting Muslims at the expense of Hindus”. While we remember the Mahatma today we must also take a moment to recognize the kinds of killers racist and extremist speech enables and motivates.
Dear @mrdamianbarr I understand you were felled by a dastardly Jaipur bug, but I wanted to send you a picture of your book in Bombay and let you know you were wry and sweet and you made me laugh and that is a gift.
