We attach labels to ourselves, labels of race, ethnicity, language, culture, class, caste, religion, nationality, political and sexual orientations. We fragment ourselves into more and more pieces and then hold on to the narratives we construct around those bits. . If anything, this crisis has shown us how none of that matters. Underneath it all, the same blood flows through our veins and the same lungs work overtime to pump oxygen into our organs. But it’s gone a step further to show us how are actions are interdependent, no matter which ivory towers we live in and how high the walls we build around ourselves are. . I must admit I am very guilty of setting myself apart from other people in this way, judging and looking down upon them. Even now I find myself getting angry at the selfish individuals who are risking others’ lives through their irresponsible actions. So nothing will be a harder lesson than this one. As a species, we are only as strong as the weakest among us. We all learn together or we all fall apart together. The idea of holding onto an ego has never seemed more laughable or more useless than right now.
