Yesterday on the first day of Navratri we dressed up in our finery and invoked Durga’s blessings by learning a powerful mantra: Mahishasura Mardini Stotam. My girls are my solace, and the root and ground of my universe. Tat tvam asi: I see the other in myself and myself in others. We make up our own rituals and secret language. They widen my compassion and my senses during this turbulent time.
Thank you @deepikamehtayoga for sharing this powerful Goddess mantra that resonates in the deepest chambers of my heart, giving birth to NavDurga and all the divine beings inside of us all 🙏🏼
And….I mean how fun is it to just play dress up ❤️

And yes, mama dressed Soufflé in Lehnga-Cholis because our clothes finally arrived in Singapore(our new home) from Mumbai (after an almost two month delay!) and in those two months the world has tilted so far on its axis, we have become those people who don’t wait for big occasions to set out the expensive china, if you know what I mean (carpe diem!) This way, we can be instructional and unbearably cute while not disregarding the reasonableness of hope.
Ah-one, ah-two, ah-three: CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN YOUR HANDS! Lemme hear ya!

Update: many of you have pointed out, the tap ideally should be shut while scrubbing to conserve water 🙏🏼 we as a family normally do our bit, but we got a bit carried away today while filming. Happy so many are conscientious enough about water conservation to point this out 🙏🏼 stay safe. Be kind.
@ferozadesigns made our day sending over the sweetest handblockprinted dresses for mommy and Soufflé in feathery light cotton, perfect for Singapore weather but with echoes of India. We decided to pay forward this kindness- this morning Sufi and Soleil said a little prayer for everyone on this blue marble we call home. I’m sharing these pictures of Soleil posing and proofing mom’s work 🙈 rocking her @ferozadesigns summer frock.
Stay safe everyone. Now is the time to activate love, creativity and kindness: Super Powers accessible to each of us. The hero 🦸♀️ lives within ✌🏼
The other week my mischievous devis spilled kum kum then proceeded to leave little Laali footprints everywhere. I felt a momentary flash of agitation. Then quick surrender to the will of these wee goddesses. When I looked again I saw the alta of my childhood in Kolkata, evoking a lineage of strong women, leaving their blood red imprints on the shifting sands of time.
Speculative distancing.
C’mon. How do you expect twins to practise social distancing 😂 (but they can self-isolate to keep others safe ✌️) Singapore

# “I’m an introvert and have recently veered into full time literary pursuits, so working from home is not an emotional burden. But in these unprecedented times, I’m very conscious of the privilege of having a safe, comforting, fortified, attractive environment so I’m taking this time to reflect, meditate and write because all progress, enlightenment and empathy begins at home.”

A good friend of mine said, “You are married to sorrow.” And I looked at him and said, “I am not married to sorrow. I just choose not to look away.”
And I think there is deep beauty in not averting our gaze.
No matter how hard it is, no matter how heartbreaking it can be. It is about presence. It is about bearing witness.
I used to think bearing witness was a passive act. I don’t believe that anymore. I think that when we are present, when we bear witness, when we do not divert our gaze, something is revealed—the very marrow of life. We change. A transformation occurs. Our consciousness shifts.

Repost from @abhiart using @RepostRegramApp – #happywomansday “The Golden Womb – Garbodakshya”
–
From the golden womb were birthed the Gods, but they had no memories from before their births.
They secretly craved to know and decided to locate it.
However there was one problem.
They couldn’t find the womb, so instead they decided to locate its “Memory.” After an arduous journey through the crevasses of time they arrived.
Draped in planetary sounds and light of many nebulas, the “memory of the womb” stood looking at the gods benevolently.
It exuded an azure like light from it’s “gyana kshetra” (center of knowing) and sent a message rippling across the minds of the Gods, aligning them.
The Gods had come looking for an answer but were now arrested by a bigger realization.
They each were the origins of life, “garbodakshya’s” in their own right.
The vision showed them, the many universes they had birthed.
The many colored Gods came into a unison.
Each representing an eco-system of the Earth, the wind currents (Maruts) the ocean currents ( Vasus) the rays of the sun (Adityas) and many other.
They became the Golden womb it once was, they became the beginning for a moment.
Sometimes, the creator may remind us through the journey we take to know simply the things we already know, but in that reminder it may invoke in us, a greater truth.
That we all are Garbo-Dakshya’s emanating from the golden primal womb of the Mother.
We all represent a role in the ecosystem of life. We are mothers, fathers, sons and daughters.
That we are alive and that this planet speaks through every pore of our existence.
Only if we must remind ourself of how the eternal exists in every leaf around us.
In every little moment there’s a window to gaze into the golden womb, kept open only with great humility and gratitude.
That’s why the Gods in their Ego often lose their heavenly abode or the bigger picture of their own unity. While the illuminated beings of the forest know that the true light of knowing lives and thrives in the great synchronicity. In the Song of Harmony.
That’s where she is, that’s where we all should be.

This headline resonates even more today, in our current scenario as India and most of the world is under lockdown, though this interview happened a week or two before the gravitas of the coronavirus hit India and the world outside of China, Hong Kong and Singapore where we now live 🙏🏼 Still stand by these words with a small addendum: ‘Taking time out for yourself is not selfish- especially when it means saving lives’

Repost from @sudhisinha using @RepostRegramApp – Positives of a lockdown…having the time for things you really love…for me Reading is one of them. Heard this book on Audible while going through the never ending chores around the house.
I heard Lisa Ray at the Jaipur Lit Fest and knew I wanted to read the book. The book is an honest, brave account of a life lived sometimes on the edge but mostly finding yourself. The book broke down the image I had of her. Lisa is smart, intelligent, well read n travelled woman and I hope she writes more often.
If you like reading autobiographies, then this one should definitely be on your reading list.

Where’s Wellington now? 🐧 This little rockhopper took a field trip to Shedd’s Wild Reef…and he’s not alone! A few Magellanic penguins that call Shedd home joined the penguin party, checking out this massive habitat. Exploring new spaces, while it might seem out of the ordinary for us, is one of the many ways we keep the animals’ days enriching and fun!

♥️🙏 School Prayer by Diane Ackerman
In the name of the daybreak
and the eyelids of morning
and the wayfaring moon
and the night when it departs,
I swear I will not dishonor
my soul with hatred,
but offer myself humbly
as a guardian of nature,
as a healer of misery,
as a messenger of wonder,
as an architect of peace.
In the name of the sun and its mirrors
and the day that embraces it
and the cloud veils drawn over it
and the uttermost night
and the male and the female
and the plants bursting with seed
and the crowning seasons
of the firefly and the apple,
I will honor all life
—wherever and in whatever form
it may dwell—on Earth my home,
and in the mansions of the stars.

Repost from @shireenquadri using @RepostRegramApp – Stay-at-home read: In this era of gloom and doom, if you’re looking for a book that celebrates life gloriously, and comes to terms with its tragedies and puts in perspective its triumphs, you must pick Lisa Ray’s enchanting memoir, Close to the Bone (HarperCollins, 2019). Life’s incertitudes often tend to fill us with doubts, poach on our dreams. The book, an honest and poetic exploration into a life lived on one’s own terms, takes you closer to the journey Ray – the supermodel, the actor, the cancer survivor, a mother of twins through surrogacy, and a woman of no fixed address – has made, with tremendous grit and gumption, looking at life with an unflinching gaze, refusing to be cowed down by odds or unfavourable, sudden turns. In here remarkably chiselled, elegant prose, Ray brings us closer to her lived experiences, right from her arrival in the Indian entertainment industry at the age of 16, the nuances of her relationship with her Bengali father and Polish mother; the frenetic pace of her life on the movie sets and her brush with the Oscars; her battle with eating disorders; being diagnosed with multiple myeloma at 37; her spiritual quest; lovers and traitors, mentors and dream-makers; and the heartaches and triumphs along the way. Through all this, Lisa navigates life with conviction, compassion and courage, never losing her humanity. And perseveres even when her quest for love doesn’t have a happy ending. In the end, it all seems to be worth it. It all seems to make sense.
