Thinking of my sweet lil sister from another mister @natasha.moor
This beautiful, generous spirit has taught me so much about smashing self-centredness- and that too from a much younger vantage point. Thinking of the time you flew to Tbilisi to meet Soufflé when they were little Chia seeds. And what a blast we had stuffing ourselves with kachapuri. I love your heart. Get well soon, my Jaan. This too will pass.

Here’s a bit of a throwback to that time #BryanAdams shot my portrait for a ‘Toronto’s Most Stylish’ feature. Did I geek out? Duh. Does self-isolating help flatten the curve? Of course. He has the most delicious, plummy British accent after settling in the UK, wrapped around the heart of a west coast (Canadian, eh?) rocker.

Repost from @boundindia using @RepostRegramApp – “I started out with this tag of being a sex symbol, which, you know, is fine. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it never tells your whole story.”

Lisa Ray joins us on our second episode of Books and Beyond with Bound. She talks about her experience in the entertainment industry, especially the rampant stereotyping and typecasting she’s endured for years. As someone who’s been “a victim of labelling” her entire life, she tells us her book Close to the Bone is her attempt to seize the narrative and take back control of her own life.
*
“When I entered the industry in the 90s, there were only basically two stereotypes that a woman could fall into,” she says. “Either you were the virginal heroine, or you were the vamp. That was it.”
*
She tells us what she thinks when she’s told to rely on her celebrity friends for promotion. Why she takes her ghostwriting accusations as a compliment, and much more. *

Repost from @amutedstory using @RepostRegramApp – Kindness
Naomi Shihab Nye – 1952-
Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things,
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand,
what you counted and carefully saved,
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
between the regions of kindness.
How you ride and ride
thinking the bus will never stop,
the passengers eating maize and chicken
will stare out the window forever.
Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness
you must travel where the Indian in a white poncho
lies dead by the side of the road.
You must see how this could be you,
how he too was someone
who journeyed through the night with plans
and the simple breath that kept him alive.
Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.
Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to gaze at bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
It is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you everywhere
like a shadow or a friend.
.
Because I’m feeling grateful, and it’s a poetry kind of day. Wherever you are, please find a way to extend a helping hand ❤️

Repost from @am_mehak using @RepostRegramApp – “Close to the bone” is the story of @lisaraniray narrated in a simple, straightforward manner. Through this book, lisa takes the readers on a deeply moving and inspiring journey. From growing in both western and Indian culture to becoming a successful model to being diagnosed with multiple myeloma at thirty-seven and finally her path towards spiritually, the book delivers hard truths. It is honest, witty and a gripping read.

Our second episode of Books and Beyond with Bound will be out tomorrow!

We are joined by author Lisa Ray, who is also an actress, model and TV personality. She tells us how writing has been her true calling her entire life and is something she is now embracing. She talks about how she entered the entertainment industry “by accident” and how those experiences shaped her first book Close to the Bone.
*
“I think you can be an introvert and you can, at the same time, want to be extremely candid and seize your own narrative,” she says. “I’ve been very candid about that and a lot of things in Close to the Bone.”
*
Lisa Ray gets incredibly personal on this episode – from her battles with cancer and eating disorders to toxic stereotypes in the entertainment industry. She talks about her constant struggle with being defined and how she hopes to redefine success.

Repost from @bookstodreamers using @RepostRegramApp – Aapke pyar mein, hum sawarne lage.. that was the song that introduced Lisa Ray to our hearts.
Lockdown reading – 3: Memoirs can be tricky. You want them to inspire you but also not alienate you. After reading Sontag by Benjamin Moser, I had to lay my reading eyes into this one by @lisaraniray. It may sound cliched when I say that I connected so much with her but that’s what brilliant writing does, it helps you rediscover bits and pieces of your own puzzles, rearranging them is the craft you have to learn by own.
And she’s a fighter who defeated multiple myeloma and survived to work actively in raising awareness about this.
Highly Recommend this book not only for the film and spiritual journeys that Lisa Rani gets on but I connected with her reflexivity of not truly belonging, of being an outsider to a world that you’re passionate about, and then rediscovering yourself through your relationships with your own body, and the family you’re born into and those that you birth. Hats off for a brilliant debut, can’t wait to read your next. 🙏🏻#bookstagrammer #bookstodreamers #readingmemoirsin2020 #filmyduniya #womenwriters #memoirwriting #writing #personalstories

Repost from @boundpodcasts using @RepostRegramApp – Did you like what you just heard? This was just a teaser. * “It was an attempt to piece together and maybe marry the two worlds that I was always straddling, and that were always kind of, you know, existing in parallel – my public life and my private life.” *
On our second episode of Books and Beyond with Bound, Lisa Ray talks about the deeply personal and unusual trajectory of her book. After publicly announcing her diagnosis with multiple myeloma and chronicling her experiences on a cancer blog, she was offered a book deal to write a cancer memoir. After completing her first draft and submitting her manuscript to her editors, she had an instinctive reaction and ended up withdrawing the manuscript. *
Lisa tells us the story of how she realized she had a bigger vision for the book, that there was no reason to do it unless it aligned with who she was and what she wanted to achieve. So she sat on it for years and years. On this episode, she takes us through every detail of her writing journey and the stages of finally completing her book. *
