So I’m 48 today, it’s also a magical 4/4/4 day in numerology and I believe in radical compassion and the power of our planet to regenerate. Also: the introvert in me loves there are no parties or over enthusiastic plans. Why celebrate a single day? I’m grateful for every moment: a teaching in disguise.

Now, in an enforced time of lockdown, is a good time to count our blessings. For myself, it’s the relationships with generous, smart, loving women that forms the bedrock of my life. Thank you to all my guiding stars. 🙏🏼 Repost from @shamimsarif using @RepostRegramApp – End of the day for you @lisaraniray but sending you the biggest non virtual hugs from me and @hananfkattan for your birthday. Update: Singapore is mandating a one month lockdown to apply a ‘circuit breaker’ to a rash of new cases. I write this piece for Mint a few days ago, and these sentiments resonate even more strongly for me today:
.
‘I believe we need to make an effort to tell different stories about difficult times, about the indirect, positive consequences of disaster on the human spirit lest we forget the “reasonableness of hope”.
Now that all our houses are burning, what do you carry when you flee to safer ground? “Ultimately it is upon your vulnerability that you depend,” the poet Rilke writes. “For the time that we are here, we are dependent on the web of life.”
There is no chance for evasions any more. We need each other, we need to look after each other, we must infect each other with fortifying emotions. At the time of writing this, India is enforcing an unprecedented, countrywide, 21-day stay-at-home order and Singapore is introducing more precautionary measures, like shutting down entertainment venues.
Living with the decisive manner in which Singapore has responded during this time of “surreal disrepair” has fortified my faith in what thinking about the greater good can accomplish for the individual in times of both uncertainty and fragile tranquillity.
Buckle up, this ride is about to get wild!

Somewhere, there’s a child who is recklessly happy,
Someone is grating orange peel
And a candle is lit
If you can’t find the answer
In the curve of a woman’s bare shoulder
In the wind and trees taking charge
In the sag of an old man’s trousers
In the rehabilitating starch of silence
Where are you looking?
Repost from @cinephileart using @RepostRegramApp – WATER [2005] – ‘Water’ is the third film of Deepa Mehta’s famous elemental trilogy, followed by Earth and fire. While her previous two features dealt topics like homosexuality and religious altercation, WATER associates with child marriage and mistreatment of widows in Indian society. Set in 1930, the film recounts the story of eight years old child bride chuyia who’s forced to live in an ashram as per Hindu tradition after her husband’s sudden death. There she meets a beautiful young widow Kalyani (Lisa Ray), mother like figure Shakuntala (Seema Biswas) and befriends with Narayan(John Abraham), a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. Through Chuyia Narayan falls in love with Kalyani , who also yearns for a lover who will respect her. The film perfectly depicts the inhumane treatment of widows, which is still a burning problem in present india. It faced major backlash during production as extremists raised objections to the film’s criticism of Hindu society, when it only took up controversial issues like ostracism and misogyny.
° My rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of five.

The fact that we have made a home in Singapore for our family in a time of crisis is strangely reassuring; once you have weathered the tough times, the good times will be exultant, you imagine. I believe we need to make an effort to tell different stories about difficult times, about the indirect, positive consequences of disaster on the human spirit lest we forget the “reasonableness of hope”.

So I want to express that I’m SUPER 🌸 appreciative of the surge of beautiful readers (because in my book anyone who reads is beautiful) who are sharing reviews and titles during this lockdown. You know I love to hear #ClosetotheBone making its way into reading nooks and bookcases across India.
While I have your attention, here’s a canny excerpt by a gentleman called David Brooks that’s doing the rounds, and it’s so thought-provoking I had to share:
.
“While we’re at it, screw certainty. Over the past few weeks I’ve been bingeing on commentary from people predicting how long this is going to last and how bad it’s going to be. The authors seem really smart and their data sets seem really terrible.
I’m beginning to appreciate the wisdom that cancer patients share: We just can’t know. Don’t expect life to be predictable or fair. Don’t try to tame the situation with some feel-good lie or confident prediction. Embrace the uncertainty of this whole life-or-death deal.
There’s a weird clarity that comes with that embrace. There is a humility that comes with realizing you’re not the glorious plans you made for your life. When the plans are upset, there’s a quieter and better you beneath.”

If you are an Indian and born in 90s, you will definitely know who Lisa Ray is. She is India’s first supermodel, an actor and a cancer survivor. I recently attended her book reading and interview session and liked the way she spoke about her autobiography. So I decided to buy it and luckily got a signed copy too. The book shares account of her nomadic existence, modelling and movie career, battle with eating disorders, being diagnosed with cancer at an age of 37 and her spiritual quest.
After reading her autobiography, I got to know the raw, brave and inspiring story of a life lived on her terms. She is a bonafide writer, having such rich expressions. She literally poured her heart out in this book. She is completely unapologetic and writes with a devil-may-care attitude, doesn’t even leaves out the dirty bits. She has a great sense of humour and even in some heart-wrenching bits, she manages to pull it off. I re-read some of the paragraphs, not only because her writing is honest and powerful, but to understand what she felt when she wrote those. The language is simple, with a crisp narration. This inspiring story needs to be read by everyone (even if you are not her fan). Highly recommended.
