Circus 1992. Yup kids, I’ve seen a lot. I’m what they call well seasoned- not spicy, salty, syrupy sweet too- and fortunately not cynical though the phrase ‘been there done that’’ occasionally pops to mind.
I’m as vintage as they come.
Thank you my dear @suchetapotnisgoa for sending me these #timecapsules from what feels another lifetime. Well, I was about 16 in these images, lost and yet filled with the wonder of possibilities and endless adventure on the horizon.

If they call Oxford the city of dreaming spires, why not christen Sobo the land of the Dreamy Piyaz shaped Dome?
Guess the location?

Word of the Day: “oobit”––a long, hairy caterpillar (Scots, also “wowbat”, “yubit”). By association, an unkempt person of shaggily hirsute appearance (e.g. after a long period of lockdown without access to hairdressers).
A BRAVE AND STARTLING TRUTH by Maya Angelou
We, this people, on a small and lonely planet
Traveling through casual space
Past aloof stars, across the way of indifferent suns
To a destination where all signs tell us
It is possible and imperative that we learn
A brave and startling truth
And when we come to it
To the day of peacemaking
When we release our fingers
From fists of hostility
And allow the pure air to cool our palms
When we come to it
When the curtain falls on the minstrel show of hate
And faces sooted with scorn are scrubbed clean
When battlefields and coliseum
No longer rake our unique and particular sons and daughters
Up with the bruised and bloody grass
To lie in identical plots in foreign soil
When the rapacious storming of the churches
The screaming racket in the temples have ceased
When the pennants are waving gaily
When the banners of the world tremble
Stoutly in the good, clean breeze
When we come to it
When we let the rifles fall from our shoulders
And children dress their dolls in flags of truce
When land mines of death have been removed
And the aged can walk into evenings of peace
When religious ritual is not perfumed
By the incense of burning flesh
And childhood dreams are not kicked awake
By nightmares of abuse
When we come to it
Then we will confess that not the Pyramids
With their stones set in mysterious perfection
Nor the Gardens of Babylon
Hanging as eternal beauty
In our collective memory
Not the Grand Canyon
Kindled into delicious color
By Western sunsets
Nor the Danube, flowing its blue soul into Europe
Not the sacred peak of Mount Fuji
Stretching to the Rising Sun
Neither Father Amazon nor Mother Mississippi who, without favor,
Nurture all creatures in the depths and on the shores
These are not the only wonders of the world
When we come to it
We, this people, on this minuscule and kithless globe
Who reach daily for the bomb, the blade and the dagger
Yet who petition in the dark for tokens of peace
We, this people on this mote of matter
In whose mouths abide cankerous words
Which challenge our very existence
Yet out of those same mouths
Come songs of such exquisite sweetness
That the heart falters in its labor….
I was a part of two seminal films, #ICantthinkstraight and #TheWorldUnseen after I left India in 2001 and threw myself into life in London and drama school. #Water happened and that opened a lot of doors in L.A. but representation was still stunted in 2006. I was considered exotic – and told I’m not Indian enough but encouraged to try out for mainstream roles with characters named Ashley or Maria del Carmen. Call me mad, but the creative oxygen, female centric narratives and non-cliched characters I craved were in those days exclusively found in Indie films so I once again shunned the traditional path to so called success. Then meeting @Shamimsarif and @hananfkattan altered my trajectory, by working with them alongside @beneaththesheetz on two sensitive, international films for which I still receive the most touching messages- of how these films empowered others to embrace their truths and come out to their families. Representation matters, deeply, and I’m so humbled that I could play a small role in helping others stand in their power. It’s hard to follow your heart and truth- ask me, I’ve been doing it for years, defying conventions and all the rational reasons to accept projects. Often people will not understand, they will not validate you, but you know what- that’s the gift. To access your inner power and stand tall without the world slapping you on the back is the ultimate way to freedom and unwavering inner joy. Today, my focus is on writing, but I close my eyes every morning and request the muses to use me to channel what is useful and enlightening that I might share through story telling and words.
Repost @shamimsarif using @RepostRegramApp – I get messages about my first film I Can’t Think Straight every single day… people reaching out to tell me that it gave them the courage to be honest with themselves and their families. While I know that courage comes from within each one of us, I also realise the power of film and TV to give us a glimpse of how life could be. Thank you to all of you who’ve been so supportive of my journey with @hananfkattan. Here’s a clip to start your weekend with a smile #icantthinkstraight #sheetalsheth #lisaray

And even when the sharpness of these memories begin to blur, we will look at an image or a diary or a solitary mop and remember. Hopefully we will not come out unscathed. Hopefully the joy of encountering each other again will be transformative. And we can walk further carrying both a sense of weight and absence.
Thanks @cosmoindia and @Nandinibhalla for putting together these portraits in isolation of so many questing, wild and loving souls.

I’m as vintage as they come. (Can you imagine what we did with moments and memories before social media? Before the internet? Before smart phones and selfies? Can you? Can you? Yup. I’m of that generation, which is why all this narcissistic fury and fuss about brand and image both amuses me and mainly exhausts me)

Via my friend @priyankaraja The network is restoring now, and I woke up to a large number of worried messages and emails from friends and well wishers all over the world, asking if we’re ok post the cyclone.
We are all ok now, so are our parents, families and our co-workers. But the night before was one of the scariest I have faced.
We live on the 22nd floor of a high-rise building with no obstructions facing us from all sides. While normally it’s a treasured ‘view’ it was incredibly frightening all evening when the cyclone Amphan showed us what nature’s fury can look like.
Cannot even imagine what the state of the homeless must have been, or the millions with semi permanent homes or every other area the cyclone would have ravaged. The plant and animal life too. Needs immediate attention and major government support. I hope my friends in the media from my list can please take note and use their voice to bring attention to this. We don’t watch TV, but seems like there’s little about this major calamity being reported out there.
This is a rare conversation between Buddha and bhikku Ananda. It’s so useful and cuts through all the noise and bs. Buddha was one awesome, cool cat of an awakened being and if you are seeking a perspective that cuts to the essence of everything, hear these words.
This helps me. Hope it does the same for you. Thank you #DharmaRainMumbai
Ananda: I can’t find free time. Life has become hectic.
Buddha: Activity gets you busy. But productivity gets you free.
Ananda: Why has life become complicated now?
Buddha: Stop analysing life. It makes it complicated. Just live it.
Ananda: Why are we then constantly unhappy?
Buddha: Worrying has become your habit. That’s why you are not happy.
Ananda: Why do good people always suffer?
Buddha: Diamond cannot be polished without friction. Gold cannot be purified without fire. Good people go through trials, but don’t suffer.
With that experience their life becomes better, not bitter.
Ananda: You mean to say such experience is useful?
Buddha: Yes. In every term, experience is a hard teacher. She gives the test first and the lessons later.
Ananda: Because of so many problems, we don’t know where we are heading.
Buddha: If you look outside you will not know where you are heading. Look inside. Eyes provide sight. Heart provides the way.
Ananda: Does failure hurt more than moving in the right direction?
Buddha: Success is a measure as decided by others. Satisfaction is a measure as decided by you.
Ananda: In tough times, how do you stay motivated?
Buddha: Always look at how far you have come rather than how far you have to go. Always count your blessing, not what you are missing.
Ananda: What surprises you about people?
Buddha: When they suffer they ask, “why me?” When they prosper, they never ask “Why me?” Ananda: How can I get the best out of life?
Buddha: Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear.
Ananda: One last question. Sometimes I feel my prayers are not answered.
Buddha: There are no unanswered prayers. Keep the faith and drop the fear. Life is a mystery to solve, not a problem to resolve. Trust me. Life is wonderful if you know how to live.
I am proud to be a part of @the_house_of_artisans who have been working to support artisans for the last 2 years!
Artisans have always been a very important part of the culture of India! But unfortunately, from the time COVID hit us, they have received no support!
They have been struggling to survive!
They are taking loans from local money lenders at 120% per year just to survive!
The worst part – they are giving their DAUGHTERS in EXCHANGE!
Each family requires – INR 4200 /month to survive!
@the_house_of_artisans is supporting 200 families for 4 months, till they are back to be able to support themselves!
I would urge you to contribute whatever you can!
The top 2 people who donate the most will get an exclusive product made by the artisan with a personal message from me!

Thank you @iamkirtikulhari for connecting me with such a worthy initiative
I am still binge watching #Paatallok and I am obsessed. Performances are measured and flawless. It’s so gripping, visceral and raw, I can’t pull my eyes away. It’s holding up a mirror to the heart of power, crime and politics, so it gets ugly at time, but it’s always compelling and anchored by the strangely hopeful journey of hapless Inspector Hathiram Chaudhury. We need to see more of these fine actors particularly @jaideepahlawat
Special mention to my friend @gulpanag for her amazing work. And @nowitsabhi – you gave me sleepless nights 😜
Thank you everyone, cast and crew. I know what a gargantuan effort I must’ve been to bring #Paatallok to life and to our screens.

I STAND WITH BENGAL
#CycloneAmphan is an unimaginable tragedy within the #Covid_19india war. May we all humbly request the central government to have mercy & shift some of its focus to provide disaster management to one of our greatest cities @PMOIndia
Anyone who knows me, knows it’s my Bengali blood that leads my conviction for just and humane conditions in this world. Now we need a call to action for my beloved ancestral land. I know we’re suffering from disaster fatigue due to COVID-19 but perhaps you can help by issuing an appeal to on social media to The Central government? Or consider supporting one of the many relief organisations in the ground? Numbers count.
Thank you @justmoilife for issuing a strong moral wake up call in my direction.

We sure have got used to this in the past four months. Being stuck at home, working without fixed hours, we are all getting used to this ‘new normal’. some even claim to have been losing their sanity with power cuts and terrible internet connections. On the flip side I’m sure many have found their inner calling of being a chef, an expert at yoga, catch up on their sleep and the importance of staying home with family. However, the concept of ‘home’ is different to different people. For some, it is a place, a thousand miles away where they desperately want to reach, at any cost, without a penny in the pocket, a vehicle to get on or even a pair of slippers for their bleeding soles, with the hope of being at peace. While we hoard more ‘essentials’ for our family and sip on our Dalgona, they share a roti among three. While we miss the social gatherings with friends a video call away, they cry on the streets unable to reach their loved ones. While we crib about running out of things to do in the comfort of our homes, they walk barefoot for miles and days to reach theirs. The list is neverending. History is witnessing one of the worst migrant crises in the country and smirking at our hypocrisy. Storms always hit the lowest of the low. Understand and acknowledge the privilege you reek of. Do what you can to ease their load. Not a funny episode, right? Nope.

Please consider donating even a small amount. Bengal is facing a natural disaster of an unforeseen magnitude amplified by the COVID-19 crisis. I know sometimes there’s a will but no clear way, so thanks to my shona @sayanigupta I’m reposting a list of worthy, on the ground organisations .
