‘Life is a good teacher and a good friend. Things are always in transition, if we could only realise it. Nothing ever sums itself up in the way that we like to dream about. The off-center, in between state is an ideal situation, a situation in which we don’t get caught and we can open our hearts and minds beyond limit’ – Pema Chodron .

From @onbeing podcast conversation with #NaomiNyeShihab:
She said, “Well, here in Japan, we have a concept called ‘Yutori.’ And it is spaciousness. It’s a kind of living with spaciousness. For example, it’s leaving early enough to get somewhere so that you know you’re going to arrive early, so when you get there, you have time to look around.” And then she gave all these different definitions of what Yutori was to her.
But one of them was — “and after you read a poem just knowing you can hold it, you can be in that space of the poem. And it can hold you in its space. And you don’t have to explain it. You don’t have to paraphrase it. You just hold it, and it allows you to see differently.” And I just love that. I mean, I think that’s what I’ve been trying to say all these years.’
Posting a throwback to #Mumbai in the throes of work yet finding stillness in the peace of my home. I think I have been prepping for social distancing for a while now. My flat in Mumbai is my sanctuary and I would only leave if I had to attend an event or film on a set. Otherwise, I invited anyone who wished to photograph or interview me home, eliminating an almost daily commute and gradually reducing my exposure to chaos, noise, pollution and a frenetic way of life.
Flirting while social distancing and not saying a word. Try this at home.

I had an exchange on social media (ahem twitter) that left me feeling raw and prickly, confused and defensive. A presumably professional Indian woman who lives in America responded to one of my tweets by sharing ‘I have two boys but I think if I had a girl I might end up protecting her the same way Devi’s mom did.’ This all started when I voiced my opinion on the Netflix series #NeverHaveIEver. But forget that, I became fixated by her blatant gender biased admission that girls need protecting, not sons. As the mom of twin daughters, of course this hits home and hard.
I had to ask myself why this notion triggers me so deeply. I came up with two things: .
1. Women re-enforcing patriarchal ideas and unwilling to decode those attitudes in 2020 is…um…I don’t want to be impolite now, so I’ll just say disappointing.
2. Treating daughters differently from sons is dangerous. It comes down to this: victim-shaming. A woman who has been ‘protected’ her whole life is often the one who shoulders blame in a case where she is violated. We see this happen with dispiriting regularity. Why did she dress like that? She was asking for trouble staying out at night. All these patriarchal judgements mouthed mindlessly, rather than rotten societal attitudes over turned.
Anyhow, I take every opportunity to expose my girls to strong, empathetic, open minded woman moulding their lives and dreams with determination and compassion. Repost from @devsanyal using @RepostRegramApp – This one pic haunts me over all the rest. I hear so many of us complaining about working from home, the foods not good enough or not cool enough or we feel cooped up indoors..
.
Take a moment to see what’s going on in the world around you and you’ll never complain again. I can’t get this image out of my head. Homeless, Hungry and Penniless is the state of millions of migrant workers who are stuck, unable to get back, being charged for tickets to the few trains that have started, no food, most of them trying to walk for hundreds of miles to get back…..
.
This breaks my heart and I hope I deeply impacts you too. The mega, not so mega stimulus package that no one is sure of what it’s going to do….I hope it does one thing to start with and that’s to sort the migrant issue out on priority.

So this popped up…back when red carpets were a thing. I think we were still courting when this photo was taken- because god knows we avoid public gatherings now, even before COVID-19. It’s called growing old together. And by the way, how the hell does anyone date/meet/fall in love in this new world order?

I am her voice today and the voices of the many victims of domestic abuse which are going unheard as they are locked up with their abusers in the lockdown. #LockDownMeinLockUp
Rising number of cases have put tremendous pressure on the resources of SNEHA, an NGO that has been fighting domestic violence since 20 years.
They need to raise funds to raise resources to tackle domestic violence.

Repost from @ravimishraindia using @RepostRegramApp – I have learned that if you must leave a place that you have lived in and loved and where all your yesteryears are buried deep, leave it any way except a slow way, leave it the fastest way you can. Never turn back and never believe that an hour you remember is a better hour because it is dead. Passed years seem safe ones, vanquished ones, while the future lives in a cloud, formidable from a distance.

Repost from @pratik543 using @RepostRegramApp – ANOTHER STUDY IN PINK
A bloom of Pink water seen at Talawe wetland amid a flamboyance of Flamingos in Navi Mumbai May 2020.
Experts said the colour could be due to an explosive
blooming of red algae that
thrives in saline water, espe-cially as the summer picks up
and the wetland loses water.
The bloom has been identified as rare and first-of-its-kind
occurence for Mumbai Metro-
politan Region by Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS)
that plans to take samples of the
water for study. While researchers were
unsure of what may have
caused it, BNHS and independent microbiologists presume
that the colour is from micro-
scopic algae. “Owing to high salinity in the
area, it looks like an algal
bloom.

(Link in bio) “You are more powerful than you think you are.
When you are connected to the all that is, you have all that is.
Stand in the light that you are.
When you stand in the light that you are, you will always do the right thing.
And when you do the right thing, it will help you, it will help everyone.
Let go of the concept of being small, or weak, or uninformed.
There is so much magnificence in each one of you.
There is so much magnificence in each one of you.
We are really powerful beings of light.
And we are awakening to that truth NOW.
Welcome this change.
Welcome this change.
Welcome this change.
You will be so glad that you did.
And walk bravely into the new world that is being created right now.
If you could see how many beings are here to help you, all of you, beings from far and wide, they are gathered to help.
Each and every one of you.
You are not alone.
You are not alone.
You have never been alone. Know yourself as the light and you will be just fine.”

Repost from @soleilnathwani using @RepostRegramApp – Communing with nature – Images from Satyajit Ray’s debut film #PatherPanchali which has had a more profound effect on Indian cinema than any other film and which won the Cannes Jury Prize in 1956. Pather Panchali has influenced the work of directors from Kurosawa to Scorsese to Nolan.
I’ve revisited this film recently as I write about it. Although at it’s core presents a picture of humanity against poverty, one thing that has struck me, especially in current times, is the way in which Ray’s camera has captured the landscape and our intuitive connection to nature which urbanization and modernity has eroded.
The images of the characters (specifically the two children Apu and Durga) bathed in sunlight amidst the forest and fields is intensely therapeutic and powerful. The experience is so immersive and captures the essence of being at one with nature.

Repost from @amitavawriter using @RepostRegramApp – Scroll is running a series called The Art of Solitude. I was asked to supply 200 words about a book, a piece of music, or art that offers solace. Here is my contribution:
The world comes to us in the form of bad news. For a year now, or maybe longer, I have been cutting out a piece of the daily newspaper and painting over it. I guess I don’t want to be passive or helpless before that onslaught of news. Maybe I’m seeking understanding, or just plain solace.
I live in upstate New York. I cut out a report on, say, the Trump administration or something terrible happening in the world, and then paint what I see outside my window. I think that’s how it all started. I have a whole folder on my computer now of news from around the world that I take a look at now and then.
In recent days, with the experience of lockdown, I have found myself returning to an image from Kashmir. A rash of cancellations during a period of curfew. It is heartbreaking and I have not been able to yet imagine what I want to draw over it.
I could read the names over and over again as if I were repeating the words of a sad prayer. #quarantine #lockdown #kashmir
