Lawd. Have mercy on my 48 year old body, guys. This @4moreshotsplease season had me jumping over bars and wearing 100 pound lehengas and busting moves to full on Sangeet choreography and workout sessions with super fit Umang which kicked my ass 😂 mercy.

I’m relatively content without human contact, but there’s a few life necessities that have bubbled to the forefront of my consciousness. And it involves ghee and more ghee.
Missing my Indian road adventures and Dhaba finger dripping goodness.

Four years ago. Vietnam. I know in our personal histories there will be a BC (before coronavirus) and we can only hope our PC (post-COVID-19) world will grant us the grace to mindfully travel our glorious planet. The year 2020 symbolises perfect vision. The veils falling from eyes, unsmudging insight. Can we take our learnings forward when we surge outside our homes, into a partially healed world?

Due to technical issues I couldn’t do the live on @harpercollinsin instagram handle, but I’ve made some videos which are uploaded on their page and I’m sharing one of my favourite poems by Naomi Shihab Nye, simply titled ‘Kindness’ here. And YES THE VIDEO IS ULTA, reflecting the mood of our planet today. Just go with it, embrace all altered realities, I say.
A reader shares an image full of wistful longing for grass at our backs and the scent of fresh flowers. A carefully distanced edition of #ClosetotheBone as you can see.
Repost from @calcuttawalks using @RepostRegramApp – Somehow I feel that an ordinary person–the man in the street if you like – is a more challenging subject for exploration than people in the heroic mold. It is the half shades, the hardly audible notes that I want to capture and explore.
The essence of the spirit of humanity shone through in every sphere of Ray’s works. We can’t get enough of Ray ever because there is so much to explore in his films. Today is his 99th birth anniversary and the sheer repertoire of this genius is incredible. Movie maker, novelist, artiste , musician , name it and he aced it.
Which is your favourite Ray film ? Or your favourite Ray novel ?

Repost from @chefsangkim using @RepostRegramApp – It’s the most affirmative statement about life I know—and my the only tattoo! 😍 A Latin term, invoked often by The Stoics, meaning “the love of one’s fate”. But it was Nietzsche who breathed poetry back into it, reinvented it into one of his most beautiful ideas.
“Let that be my love henceforth! I do not want to wage war against what is ugly. I do not want to accuse; I do not even want to accuse those who accuse. Looking away shall be my only negation. Some day I wish to be only a Yes-sayer.” * * *
At our deepest level, we know that things really could not have been otherwise, because everything we are and have done is bound inextricably in a web of consequences since our birth. We all wish we could cherry-pick the good things in our lives and discard the rest, knowing that it is one of the crueler lies we tell ourselves. Most of the time, we react violently against negative events, unwilling to accept their role (and potential promise) in our lives. We feel helpless to love and embrace the flow of events because so much of them—natural disasters, illness and death, accidents, pandemics—are out of our control, making us feel like we’ve lost our grip on any sense of meaning or purpose that used to steer our lives. Saying YES to the WHOLE of life, in all its uncertainty, failings, and occasional moments of ecstatic beauty—that is Amor Fati.

Repost from @dag.world using @RepostRegramApp – “This whole business of creation, of the ideas that come in a flash, cannot be explained by science. It cannot. After my @rolibooks conversation with @sujstyle quite a few of you have been asking about my poetry. I was honoured to have a few of my poems published by @thepunchmagazine and I’m sharing one here. You can also take a look @protestpoet
I’m working towards a book of poetry so I won’t be sharing anymore original works right now, but it’s true, it’s poetry, the artists and philosophers that can help us re-imagine and shape a new and more sustainable world. The other way is not working. It’s just not. We gave you hard headed, tunnel visioned, rational to a fault types a chance. You screwed up.
So excited for this. Repost from @harpercollinsin using @RepostRegramApp – We’re ending #lockdown2 and #RESET with the elegant & eloquent @lisaraniray! Join us #live on our Instagram handle as she talks about current thoughts, life philosophy, #ClosetotheBone and new writing!

From my piece for @travelandleisureindia :
.
‘In the shadow of stilled construction cranes, as I enter Kim Seng Park, I hear an odd sound. A thin yet delighted cry from the water. A family of otters is swimming across the river. I’ve seen the signs warning not to feed the otters, but the creatures themselves have remained elusive. I watch their fluid movements as they swim to the opposite shore, slicked heads flashing in the sun. All the luck I never see is manifest in the reflective river, in this brief moment stretched out in slow motion, in the family of otters reclaiming the land for themselves. As they emerge on the shore to play and slide against one another in exultant squeaks, I am taken hostage by the moment. I had forgotten, the ending and beginning of every day are astronomical events. But that sense of wonder has been returned by calamity. Watching the otters, I cannot help but wonder: when will we emerge on the opposite shore?’

My friend the renowned poet, writer and dancer @tishanidoshi has contributed six new poems to the current issue of @granta_magazine ‘Membranes’ edited by @byranadasgupta and they are piercing, opulent fables. This one below is titled ‘Self’ and forgive the reformatted line breaks, but give into the language.

And when they ask, what kind of animal
would you be, I always say gazelle or lark,
never cockroach, even though they’ll outlast
us all. Once I dreamed I had a body with two
heads like those ancient figures from the Zarqa
River – bitumen eyes, trunks of reed and hydrated
lime, built thick and flat without genitals, nothing
shameful to eject except tears. We all want to be
monuments but can’t help shoving our fingers
in dirt. Imagine a life in childhood – one face
to the womb, another to the future. What we remember
is the road, peering through a lattice at dusk,
the trauma of burial. Will we have terracotta
armies to take us through, will we be alone
with the maggots? How good the rain is
after a failed romance. Never mind the muddy
bloomers. We are appalled by life and still,
any chance we get we emerge from the earth
like cicadas to sing and fuck for a moment
of triumph. The shock we carry is that the world
doesn’t need us. Even so, we go collecting parts –
an afternoon by the sea, a game of hopping on
and off scales, nose low to the ground, looking
for that other glove to complete us
Here I am globe, spinning planet.
Tell me why are you not astonished?
THIS.

Imagine all the people…
—-
In life, there are so many things that divide us. Religion, race, politics, social status and many more….But today a global pandemic brings us all together as one.
—-
Over the next few months our health care system will be tested. Many lives will be lost. Health care providers will be under an incredible amount of stress to save thousands of people. But when times are as dark as they are today, nothing shines brighter than the human spirit. —-
There is something beautiful about a collective struggle. And the beauty in what we are facing today is that the only way to overcome this pandemic is for us to all come together as one….
—-
Nurses, doctors, students, research scientists, politicians, Uber eats drivers, cashiers, factory workers etc…..Getting through this will be hard but one thing is certain…the only way we will get through it is together, as one
—-

“You might say that I’m a dreamer. But I’m not the only one. I hope some day that you will join us…and the world will live as one….”
