Glacier King!! Thank you @solidadventures. Quite certainly the biggest salmonid fish I will catch during my lifetime. 85lbs / 38kg of pure madness – look at the size of that adipose fin. This chinook was caught in @estanciacristina in El Calafate, Argentina in the headwaters of Rio Santa Cruz.
And then some bad news about the Santa Cruz: the river and its fishery will most likely soon be demolished by a Chinese mega dam & hydro power project. The construction of the dam has already begun – without any significant environmental impact studies on the dam’s effects on nature having been done. The few studies on the dam’s impact on birds and wildlife and questions on it’s impact on the nearby glaciers have simply been brushed off.
For a few more years, fishermen will be able to enjoy the free flowing river system and it’s incredible king salmon fishery.
What’s mindblowing is that the El Calafate region in Patagonia must be one of the windiest places on the planet. A cute creature was struggling to get up on it’s feet. We got out of the car, saw it was a newborn guanaco lying next to it’s own placenta, and helped him up. At first it seemed a bit scared, but after a minute or two it clearly started getting attached to us wanting our attention. We weren’t quite ready to become parents to a guanaco so we drove off to see if it’s parents would return, and after a short moment they ran to him for what seemed like a happy reunion. So here we go: Huey, Dewey and Louie find a river with no fish, and discover a dam that has been built downstream. ”Does sauna kill the corona virus?”. Perhaps because I built a sauna called Löyly (@loylyhelsinki) I’ve been recently asked quite a few questions about sauna & corona. There are numerous false ”expert” statements and claims flying around social media about how sauna supposedly kills the virus. Do not believe in these dangerous chain emails that people spread without any fact checks. Quickly: yes, regular sauna sessions are GREAT for increasing your body’s resilience towards a variety of illnesses, starting from alzheimer and dementia (for further reading & facts, google ”sauna & dementia”) all the way to strengthening your immune system. But unlike the numerous ”doing a 20 minute sauna session will kill corona” claims suggest, if you show any symptoms of corona, stay out of the sauna. Exposing your body to extreme heat when you have fever or experience any lung / respiratory problems is a terrible idea. A good rule of thumb: sauna as often as possible when healthy, stay away when feeling sick.
And an update on Löyly: for the safety of our customers and staff, our saunas have been closed for some time now. The restaurant is closed as of today.

Meille suomalaisille luonnossa liikkuminen on vielä – onneksi – melko arkinen osa elämää. Maailmalla se harvemmin on. Puhdasta ja hyvinvoivaa luontoa löytyy yhä vähemmän ja yhä harvempi vietää aikaa luonnossa, joten joskus on syytä muistuttaa ihmisiä asioista jotka voivat tuntua suomalaiselle itsestäänselviltä.
Tosin (setämäisen saarnaamisen uhallakin) on todettava, että myös suomalaisia lasten ja nuorten vanhempia tuntuu välillä olevan syytä muistuttaa luonnossa liikkumisen merkityksestä: Älypuhelimien ruudun tuijottamisen sijaan lasten kuuluisi touhuta edes osa ajasta lähimetsässä.
