[@ayanaeliza 👋🏽 takeover post] There are ~23 million Black Americans who are *already* deeply concerned about the #ClimateCrisis. (MILLION!) But how can we expect Black people to effectively lead their communities on the existential threat of climate when faced with the existential threat of racism?
This oped I wrote, connecting the dots on all we are dangerously squandering, is what inspired our IG Live conversation yesterday.

Thoughts and prayers. Love and light. Those won’t solve racism or climate change. So what are you going to DO? The options are endless, and there is a place for *everyone* in this work.
We sometimes talk about racial justice and climate justice as separate things. But in the end, as @mary.heglar reminded us is in a recent episode of her Hot Take podcast, justice is justice, it’s all one — big enough to hold us all.

Hi! 👋🏽 @ayanaeliza here with a FACT: People of color care *more* about climate change than white people. It’s *way* past time to bust the myth of environmentalism being a white thing. We’ve got a lot of work to do. We’re gonna need everyone.
Who in the USA is concerned about climate change? 📈
49% of Whites
57% of Blacks
70% of Latinx
Why is the number so much higher for Latinx people? Per polling, primarily because they have stronger egalitarian worldviews and a stronger sense that their friends and family want them to take action. Secondarily, because they are more at risk from environmental hazards.
Think we can effectively address the #ClimateCrisis without a diverse and inclusive #ClimateJustice movement? 🤔 … NOPE!
Imagine what would be possible if POC who *ALREADY CARE* about climate didn’t have to deal with racism and could instead devote more energy to #ClimateSolutions… 💭💪🏽✨.
.
Meanwhile on the climate denier side… 🤨… white folks, please go talk to your cousins. Please.

[@ayanaeliza #PassTheMic post 👋🏽 ] When not pausing to focus on racial justice, I work on climate solutions — especially ones that involve the ocean. 🌊 We rarely talk about ocean policy, but the ocean is kind of a big deal.
Here’s the thing: If we don’t include the ocean, we’ll fail at addressing the #ClimateCrisis.
Allow me to explain, with this article I wrote for you about how the ocean is out there tryna save us: 💨 Offshore wind energy! 🌱Coastal ecosystems! ⛽️ Algae biofuel! 🦪 Regenerative #OceanFarming!
Time to flip the script — the ocean is not a mere victim (although we really need to cut it out with the climate change, overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction), it’s also 💪🏽 A HERO!
Did you know: Coastal wetlands 🌱 can absorb 5 TIMES as much carbon in their soils as a forest?! #BlueCarbon. AND help protect us from storms.
This is my #WorldOceansDay piece in @scientific_american. 💙 Swipe to read — or link in story and here: bit.ly/SciAm16.
Never turn your back on the ocean. It brims ✨ with climate solutions.
p.s. Why are there not wind turbine and solar panel emojis yet?! 😭

Hi! 👋🏽 It’s @ayanaeliza taking over Julia’s feed for #Juneteenth. I’m a marine biologist (no, not like Constanza, like with an actual PhD!) and policy nerd who cares about justice. And I’m madly in love with climate solutions.
So, I’ll start off by saying: Ocean conservation is a social justice issue. Also, octopuses 🐙 are rad. Thank you for coming to my 1.25 minute TED Talk.
We gotta connect the dots, y’all. There is no other way.
Shoutout to @refinery29 and @popculturepirate for making this with me in 2019. ✨ Still relevant!

Thrilled to be talking racial justice & climate justice with @ayanaeliza live on IG on Friday at 1PM ET / 10AM PT! Watch her video to see why she’s such a rockstar and then please give her a follow.
Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson is a brilliant marine biologist, policy expert, writer, and Brooklyn native. She is the founder of the consultancy @OceanCollectiv, and of the non-profit think tank @UrbanOceanLab. And she’s got a book coming out soon! (Follow @allwecansave for more…)
We’re chatting on Juneteenth, a day to commemorate Black freedom – and a day for us to educate ourselves, amplify Black voices and celebrate Black achievement. I’m really excited for this conversation with Ayana and I hope you’ll join us. (As a bonus: she’s taking over my IG this weekend, too. Can’t wait to see what she teaches us about climate solutions… and how they are intertwined with justice.)
