My writing perspective today has grown out of an impulse to defend against the world’s growing inability to mine beneath the surface of appearance. Reflecting personally from the vantage point commonly known as midlife, I can apprehend the harvest of a life of cross pollination and fluid identity. As someone who has grown through pain and humor, today I see my experiences as an accidental actress and of not belonging as universal and yet useful.
I also write to pay obeisance to the unstoppable force of love which takes many forms: protection, fury, tenderness, boldness and intimacy; each experience inviting deeper knowing of the very human experience of being broken, misunderstood and vulnerable. Ultimate resilience, to me, lies in vulnerability and an ability to open completely to each experience. By going to the borders of yourself, by expanding from there, by failing, by falling, by rising. By unearthing buried instinct. By listening. And laughing.

Dressed to flash mob. Suddenly dawns. Groups more than 5 not permitted. Flashbulb. We ARE a flash mob. Just don’t arrest us. We take up a lot of space but there’s only two of us.

I’m probably delusional, but ain’t this an album cover? Or maybe it’s just the dust jacket of my life right now.
There’s times I want to adorn myself in traditional fabrics, silhouettes and jewellery. Tonight I’m channeling my longing for India and pairing these gorgeous vintage Tibetan inspired earrings by @antiqa_handcrafted with rubies, Ethiopian opals and diamonds along with @tokreeshopjaipur new season floral kurta. Fortunately, we have enough Indian friends in #Singapore that will indulge my Desi moods. (Wearing a lot more ethnic wear than I ever wore in Mumbai 😎)

Cute mask alert. Thank you @picchika for this hand painted floral wonder. Brightens up this rainy day in #Singapore. A reminder not to complain that rain follows sun, follows rain.
Can’t wait to slip into the gorgeous sari you sent this weekend.

Trotting out some studio memories. This time outside of time, so emotionally full, elastic and troublesome has clarified so much. Voices and shouts gather themselves in the distance and walk like drumbeat through the back alleys of my head.
I am grateful for the lights, the experiences and relationships, but it’s clear that when I quiet myself there’s only one way forward and it’s away from artifice towards a contemplative and quiet life of words and family.
Take me back.

Repost from @mediumbyriddhijain using @RepostRegramApp – Happy Accidents.
She wears a striking red sari that she says, reminds her of her Bengali father and Polish mother. She has a picture of them stashed away in her phone. When she raises a bindi to her forehead and hands you an elusive smile, you feel the layers on her skin dissolving.
Oh! I never planned to be a model or an actor. She remarks casually. It’s one of those happy accidents. The rain lashes against her voice as she sits cocooned inside glass walls. Her voice resonates as she points out, ironically, how removed Mumbai is from divinity despite being surrounded by temples, Mosques and Churches.

This is a fire cracker of a debut. These short stories crackle with a fascinating, wide ranging and whimsical range of human experience. Writer #NishaSusan’s fresh voice and sassy sensibility reflects the many contradictions, intersections and jigsaw puzzle of love and life in contemporary, digital, conflicted India. A reminder of how much I enjoy the short story form, especially when it’s as compulsive a read as #Thewomanwhoforgottoinventfacebook

Happy to share my original piece for @kindleindia on Coddiwompling through these times. What’s that, you say? I dare say it might even tickle you out of your lockdown trance. Link to the article in bio. Here’s a little excerpt:
“Life can be hostile if we insist on sticking to a plan day after day, because it narrows our perceptions and sucks the joy out of simply stumbling into a bog of miracles.
The coddiwompler knows, don’t block the entrance. How do we understand the vast expanse of what it means to be alive if we don’t explore all its amazing possibilities and terrible realities? Illumination comes when you don’t actively seek it, but seek you must, the sacred in the everyday.
While the coddiwompler code prevents me from revealing more about the beatific yet vague destination, just remember: in disarray lie imaginative kingdoms. Surrender to the twin forces of wonder and absurdity that coddiwompling brings you amidst all the rage and fury of the world. (Brings hand to mouth and whispers: The truth is, everyone is winging it.)”
Repost from @sayantansunnyghosh using @RepostRegramApp – On this day in 1962, Bob Dylan recorded his most popular protest song, “Blowin’ in the Wind”. Every word still so relevant as if it was only written yesterday.
Before playing it for the first time at Gerde’s Folk City nightclub in Greenwich Village, he announced, “This here ain’t no protest song or anything like that, ’cause I don’t write no protest songs.” During the performance, he couldn’t read some of his own handwriting and made up some of the lyrics as he went along.
This picture is a 1968 Elliot Landy portait of Dylan taken outside of his home in Byrdcliffe, NY.

A: I love that @vogueitalia is highlighting a breakout generation of Indian women that I rant about to anyone within earshot and who give me life.
B. I love Shweta.
C. This is should be mounted as THE anti-Matchmaking campaign. Especially for the Indian diaspora. Eegads. Don’t get me started.

Shweta is a stylist, fashion designer and artist living in Mumbai. She curates her life in the same style as her wardrobe and this is evident in the work she creates as a stylist as well as how she decorates her home. Little details in every nook and corner of her home show memories of hers and of others, lives well lived and made nostalgic in paintings and little knick-knacks. Her style is authentic to her and is a window into her mind and mood.

The idea of a woman having a career, being independent and living on her own terms, to explore herself professionally and personally and to push her boundaries is a very contemporary notion in India.
As a society at large, we often compare growth and evolution by the success stories of pioneers. Here’s a list of 13 women who are part of a new India that is being formed, an India on the path to a change that starts in the mind and in the home. These are women who have broken stereotypes and pushed the boundaries of gender and occupation as a way of life.

I am BURSTING with excitement and pride. This is the book the WORLD NEEDS RIGHT NOW. Order. Now. Thank me later. Repost from @karunaezara using @RepostRegramApp – So very very very thrilled to share that THE HEART ASKS PLEASURE FIRST, my first book, will be out with @PanMacmillanIndia on 21st September 2020, and is now available for pre-order! This here for the first time is the cover created by none other than @ShiloShivSuleman. I’m not sure how to process this moment, because up until now this book was mine. But now, I offer it to you. I hope you will find it worthy. Thank you for waiting over a decade for me to tell this story. ❤️ Here’s what my wonderful publishers have to say about the book:
It’s a sunny day in 2001 and Daya, a ballet student, is sitting in a park in Wales far away from her home in India. Unbeknownst to her, she is about to meet Aaftab, a young Muslim lawyer from Pakistan, and fall inexplicably in love. Even as Aaftab battles his heart, their relationship transcends the divides of religion, nationality and language. They forge profound bonds but the cataclysmic events of the year will have dangerous ramifications and push them to confront the most difficult complexities of their lives. Set in a world of students but breathtaking in its expansiveness, The Heart Asks Pleasure First is a spellbinding first novel that speaks urgently to the frailties of our times. Karuna Ezara Parikh humanizes the big themes of friendship and family, migrant and xenophobia, with the deftness of a poet and the magic of a born storyteller.

A poetic ode to the opulent aura of a city like no other; the one that is synonymous with the lavish lifestyles and astounding jewels of the Nizams. Penned and beautifully narrated by one of the finest art historians and curators we have today, Deepthi Sasidharan.
Rithika, the dynamic founder of @ollie_oils dropped off a care package of her mama earth friendly essential oil products the other week. We love them all, but right now, in the middle of dengue season, the natural mosquito repellant is the hero product. I spray it generously on little arms and legs and then turn the bottle on myself.

Repost from @ollie_oils using @RepostRegramApp – Lemon eucalyptus essential oil is one of the most potent natural insect repellents and is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
It is one of the key ingredients in our Mosquito Repellent spray along with nine other essential oils to ensure protection against not just mosquitoes but a wide range of insects in the outdoors. And it smells great!
