Mineappolis Public Schools just voted unanimously to cut ties with the Minneapolis police department and cancel “special resource officer” contracts, days after the University of Minneapolis announced they were cutting police contracts for events management and other services. I feel it’s hard for people outside the USA to understand what a big deal this is, and the daily terror that black students have been living in leading up to this moments – here are a handful of news stories of many. There are videos of many of these incidents but they are honestly to horrific to share. We know about these incidents because they were filmed – so many more children have been brutalised behind closed doors. It is also a lesson to all of us in what happens when all conflict resolution is outsourced to the police. (This is happening in the UK with mental health interventions after austerity has left health and social services in tatters – experts cite this as one of the main reasons that deaths in police custody are at a 10-year high.) This is such a huge victory for the protesters in Minneapolis. It is not meaningless PR, not “reforms” that often somehow end up further empowering the state, but hitting the police where it matters: their presence, their power and their budgets . #DefundThePolice #BlackLivesMatter #protestmatters
