Passion. Discipline. Courage. Life @jr @ladjly
‘NOT MY KING’ In the period from 1885 to 1908, many well-documented atrocities were perpetrated in the Congo Free State (today the Democratic Republic of the Congo) which, at the time, was a colony under the personal rule of King Leopold II of the Belgians. These atrocities were particularly associated with the labour policies used to collect natural rubber for export. Together with epidemic disease, famine, and a falling birth rate caused by these disruptions, the atrocities contributed to a sharp decline in the Congolese population. The magnitude of the population fall over the period is disputed, with modern estimates ranging from 10 million to 15 million deaths. We can’t change the future without acknowledging the past and the unspeakable pain that was caused. Change and healing imply assuming responsibity and allowing conversation about, and expression of traumas that have been suffered. This image wants to generate open and productive conversation about a very painfull chapter in our history. We can only unite and merge when all is expressed and confronted. The time is now. Thanks to @thecrystalshipoostende and @allaboutth1ngs and the city of Ostend for making this possible and contributing to a very necessary process. Many thanks to @larsen_bervoets for assisting and helping out !! You rock 💥 Photos by @nickdecombel

In loving and living memory of my mother. #timeflies #midnightmaurauding #clandestino
Life is hard today. Pressure and suffering everywhere. We need each other more than ever. Let’s find ways, tiny and huge, to contribute to each other’s well being. No judgement, just a desire for harmony and balance. We can do this. Life is beautiful if we make it so for one another. Painted this 300m2 wall on a prison yard in my hometown Antwerp in Belgium. Due to corona, the inmates suffer very harsh consequences. No visits, no programs and so on. The pressure is immense. People suffer more than before. Together with @larsenbervoets we tried to create a wall that communicates with the inmates on a soul level. Hoping they find the strength within them to hold on in these tough times. On a larger perspective we also hope it’s an incentive to reconsider our carceral system. People are responsible for their actions, true. But let’s find a way to make the time spent inside, a time that stimulates conscious introspection, desire for change, and development of creativity. We need to help break the destructive behavioural patterns and reflexes by feeding the spirits with light and hope and courage and discipline. For now we’re just freezing time in their life and that’s it. That’s a timebomb that will fire back as usual. Time for a change through consistency, vision and commitment. A journey from darkness to light. Let’s nourish the soul and see what flowers might grow from that. Once again thanks to my amazing team @nansschonkeren @filipvanroe @natascha_vw for the heart and passion and love and commitment you guys always show up with. I’m blessed. Many thanks to #fodjustitie and #cellmade Special thanks to my creative partner @larsen_bervoets . You rock brother ⚡️ Fissures and flaws. Surface cracks and deep scars. Tangible pangs: Our world is riddled with them. It hints at breaking, splitting, snapping, but this giant rock never caves to its torment. This is an homage to our home and the infinite stone it’s yielded us. I’ve photographed these so-called defects all over the world, then magnified and painted them somewhere else on the planet. This is a form of gratitude, announcing there’s glory in imperfection, triumph in pain and echoed connections everywhere.
