FROM THE VAULTS. Anne has often said her late husband Stan, seen here on the left, was the inspiration for Lestat’s physical appearance and his daring confidence. Does that mean Anne was the basis for Louis, who struggles mightily to determine his proper place in the universe? These two central characters have evolved and grown over the course of THE VAMPIRE CHRONICLES, but the seeds of their initial inspiration can be seen here, in this shot of a very young Anne and Stan, taken in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. FROM THE VAULTS. Taken just moments after the 2013 Thriller Awards in New York City where Anne was named Thriller Master, a lifetime achievement award bestowed by the International Thriller Writers association. Originally, Anne had planned to give only a brief acceptance speech but the moment carried her away and she spoke movingly of how she never believed work as “transgressive” as hers who would find a wide audience. “I really am someone who has had all my dreams come true.” (Posted by Anne’s Team) #annerice #authorsofinstagram #writersofinstagram #thevampirechronicles #lestat #thevampirelestat

FROM THE VAULTS. Taken in the San Francisco Bay Area, sometime around the late 70’s or early 80’s, this photograph depicts Anne much as she looked at the beginning of her career as a published novelist. Many forget that after the publication of INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, it took Anne many years before she returned to the world of vampires. In the interim, she wrote two deeply researched historical novels, FEAST OF ALL SAINTS and CRY TO HEAVEN, published on either side of the birth of her son, @christopher.rice.writer while her husband Stan continued to work as a professor at San Francisco State University. The success of THE VAMPIRE LESTAT, however, would change their lives forever, allowing Stan to retire and the Rices to fulfill Anne’s lifelong dream of moving back to New Orleans, the city of her birth. FROM THE VAULTS. San Francisco is as much a character in THE VAMPIRE CHRONICLES as New Orleans or Paris, as evidenced by that opening shot of the Golden Gate Bridge in the film version of INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE. Anne’s vaults are filled with photographs like this one. Here she is with her husband Stan in Golden Gate Park. Stan was the inspiration for the vampire Lestat and would become one of the Bay Area’s most celebrated poets before Anne was first published. He was always the first to read her work up until his death from a brain tumor in 2002. FROM THE VAULTS. The family together, taken at their former home in San Francisco’s Castro District, circa 1986. Some of the dolls in the background would later be included in the collection at St. Elizabeth’s in New Orleans. Stan was still a tenured creative writing professor at San Francisco State University, Christopher was around nine years old. While Anne had recently published THE VAMPIRE LESTAT, the family was just shy of the enormous lifestyle changes that would be brought about by the publication of THE QUEEN OF THE DAMNED and its popularity. FROM THE VAULTS. It started in high school journalism class when a young man with a fair bit of acne got up from his desk and went to the back of the room to sit next to a new transfer student named Anne. “I don’t feel like sitting up front all there by myself,” he said, “I’d rather sit by you.” Struck by his confidence and intelligence, Anne could sense even then that she’d just met someone who would change the course of her life. A few years later, right after they both graduated, Anne and Stan Rice would be married. And they’d stay married until Stan passed away at age 62. Please be advised. Thank you, Team Anne.
Today we are grieving the loss of Anne’s wildly talented and endlessly kind cousin, cinematographer Allen Daviau, the man who stood behind the lens for films such as E.T. and EMPIRE OF THE SUN. Here’s a remember of Allen written Anne’s son @christopher.rice.writer: My cousin Allen Daviau died last night of COVID-19. While I might be biased, he was, in my opinion, one of the greatest cinematographers in modern Hollywood. He will probably be most remembered for his work on E.T. But I believe his masterpiece was Stephen Spielberg’s EMPIRE OF THE SUN. One of my fondest memories of Allen is when he came to visit us when I was a boy and explained for me in detail how he helped craft the scene in which Mrs. Victor, played by Miranda Richardson, peacefully passes a way at the exact moment Hiroshima is bombed on the distant horizon. It remains for me one of the most striking and subtle and haunting scenes in a film, and I am enormously proud my brilliant cousin helped bring it to life. Allen was a man who radiated kindness. I never knew him to raise his voice or lose his patience. For me, a child obsessed with the movies, he brought the magic of Hollywood to our home when I was young and he did so on a tide of gentle generosity. Together, he and my mother were unique members of their family who reached for big dreams with absolute courage. They were blessed to succeed, and the bond between them was always like that of a brother and sister. Goodbye, my sweet, brilliant cousin. You live on for us in the many frames of beautiful film you helped bring into the world. And your loss sadly makes this terrible pandemic feel all the more real.
Anne wishes everyone a wonderful holiday season.
