We’ve seen all the footage this week of protestors suffering the harmful effects of the militarization of police forces across the country. It’s an unfair fight for justice, decency and basic human rights. So I spent the week working on sturdy, lightweight prototypes for protestor shields and came up with this. Share widely & adapt as necessary. I’ve made 10 (paid for out of my own pocket) and will gladly make a fuckton of em if nonblack folks want to contribute to help supplement the cost (Venmo: @jerrika). To make your own:
1. Cut/bend/shape cardboard to size
2. Create a middle layer from plastic or vinyl. I’ve used nonslip mats from the dollar store, those large placemats for pet water bowls, camping pads, Rubbermaid lids, etc. Glue this layer between the cardboard with e6000.
3. Use duct tape to seal all edges and reinforce where needed.
4. Drill holes for handles. Handles can be old leather, strap belting &/o legit cheap handles from Home Depot or Ikea. Use D-rings to make em adjustable.
5. Secure handles with bolts, washers & nuts.
6. Cover the outward facing side with the truth.
7. Protect yourself and others.
