For me and for almost everyone I know, 2020 has been the most difficult year of our lives. Last week, my 7-year-old asked me “daddy, is it always going to be this way?” And I told him no, there is reason to hope. And I believe that so deeply. I am grateful for every one of you that has survived and in some ways thrived this year, against all odds. What sustained me in 2020 was my family, my friends, and THE WORK. I released a lot of content this year — films, documentaries, TV SHOWS — and I tried my best to make entertainment that shines a light on the unseen, the disenfranchised and the hopeless. When you are in the public eye, taking slings and arrows is part of the process. That’s why I was shocked when so many people sent me this article talking about the work I made in 2020. I felt seen, and understood. Thank you to Decider, and thank you to the millions of people who have supported the work I put out this year.
