This is my sister and her family outside of their Virginia home today.

Here is her post:

“I think a good way to stand with MLK Jr today is to spend some time researching and following leaders who are working in the civil rights movement of now.

Statistically, white people like to venerate civil rights leaders when they are dead.

We do not generally stand with them while they are living and demanding change to the status quo.

(Only 30% of white people approved of MLK Jr. when he was alive and demanding change. But we like to imagine we’d have been marching with him then.)

If we want to push forward and honor the Reverend’s sacred legacy of “the urgency of now” let’s stand with and for our civil rights leaders of today.

As you do your research, may I suggest starting with Black women?”
