Joel and I were standing at the monitor on Tigerland lining up the background when I noticed that his gaze was transfixed on something. I followed his eyeline to the crowd to find a tall good looking young man towering over everyone in his part of the frame. As I moved to look back at Joel I could hear him say to himself “He’s beautiful” . The 70’s period styling had transported him to another place in time. Somehow I found the nerve to ask a rather personal question. “Joel have you ever been with a woman?”. This breaks his gaze as he smiles , looks at me and responds with a twinkle in his eye, “Matty I’ve been with 8 women in my life….. but over a thousand men”. This was Joel. He was a lover of films, celebrity, art, stories, Ralph Lauren, Ojai, New York, antiquing , conversation, but most of all STYLE. He was the first director I ever worked with that would excise dialogue with the confidence that it wasn’t necessary. The first to ever have the gravitas to be able to speak to an A list actor with the authority of a parent. The first to fearlessly come to the defense of himself and his crew to a studio on the power and promise of his experience. From riding the subway with Andy Warhol to writing Car Wash at The Madonna Inn this man had a wealth of stories to share, but the class and discretion to never tell them twice. RIP to this fiercely stylish and larger than life man. Your films will be here forever. #legend #tigerland #number23 #phonebooth
