5 years ago I started thinking about an 18 year old orphan called Josh ‘Kid’ Jones, living in the Ghetto of Soho, London in the year 2078. Then I began to think about a group of people called The Offliners, who reject a Virtual Reality Universe called Perspecta: the new way of life in 2078. I imagined the Offliners living in the disused Piccadilly Circus underground station in this amazing, artistic, multicultural subterranean community made up of hundreds of people—young and old—who care about the environment and each other and who are determined not to turn their back on planet Earth by going to live in deaf, dumb, computerised bliss. No matter how much the human race might have destroyed it. Finally, I pictured Kid discovering an anachronistic piece of technology called an “iPhone” in amongst the rubble and the ruins of the Ghetto. And then I thought: “what if, somehow, that iPhone could connect him to a girl in the year 2021?” Would the two of them be able to change The History of the Future? Picture 1 was taken shortly after that, when I finished the first draft of my novel about Kid and the Offliners and their fight to save the future.
