Lester Young. A name I was not familiar with until @usvsbillieholiday . As I began to dig and find out as much information as I could about this man I realized he had already influenced my everyday life. Before Lester “bread” was only a food, a “crib” was only something you placed a baby in and “cool” was an approximate temperature. So if you understand what I mean when I say “ I’m just at the crib trying to get my bread right so I can step out looking cool” – that’s Lester. He coined these terms and pioneered the vernacular of the culture. He changed the way people not only heard the tenor saxophone but also how they played it. His note choice specific and airy. Choosing to float on top of rhythm rather than cut through it. Often turning his mouth piece, not just to add his only personal swag to the instrument, but to adjust his play and strengthen his unmatched stamina.
But what hit me the most was the way others spoke of his love for Billie. Lady, as he called her. That perhaps, was the most impressive. After we all pass, we expect people to speak on how we loved our families or our significant others but this type of plutonic love doesn’t get mentioned as much. Personally I don’t think we have enough depictions in the media of plutonic love between men and women. The beauty in that simply resonates differently. That love was something I really wanted to capture. Felt compelled to capture.

I have to admit, before making this film, I was aware of Billie Holiday’s contribution to music and black culture but I wasn’t fully aware of her fight as an iconoclast and civil rights activist. I find this happens most black history months, where I learn something that gives me greater context of what our hero’s had to go through to be the people they were. Hopefully this #blackhistorymonth we all get an education on not only Billie but all of those who came before us who’s stories were not taught to us in their totality. 28. Thank you for all of the well wishes. Everyone always asks “So what are you doing for your birthday?” While I plan to spend the majority of the day in reflection and gratitude one of the bigger things I did today was vote. I scheduled my voting plan around my birthday to make sure I didn’t put it off. Please make a plan and execute it.
Reminder: if you’re using a mail in ballot like I did make sure to remember that your signature on the ballot must match the signature you used to register. I registered a decade ago and like most people my signature has evolved over time. Had to look up my signature on my license to make sure it matched and counted
Thanks again for all of the love and of course, Vote ❤️
15 years. Wow. Did a thread on twitter speaking on some of the things I get asked a lot about the show and just some general info you may not know. These are some of the highlights. Go check out the full thread if interested. Salute to everyone who was apart of this show. In some way shape or form we all came together to make our collective mark. Love always 🖤✌🏾
