I love the sandwiches made on the Acme pizza bianca! There is always more filling than bread: the secret of a great sandwich. Bartavelle Cafe has shown us the way with salami, shaved fennel, aïoli and lots of rocket! And now we are making “to go” sandwiches for lunch at Panisse.
I know I have posted this before but I want to post it again because I love witnessing children that are so capable and naturally generous. We need to cultivate the circumstances in our schools where they learn from each how to share.
Ann Cromley who cooks at Chez sent me this photo of chicory lettuces to be sold at our Chez Marketplace. The diversity is astonishing and the beauty of them lifts my spirits more than I can say.
My very dear friend Charles Shere passed away yesterday leaving his wife Lindsey after 64 years of marriage. They both dreamed up Chez Panisse with me way back when and have been essential to its existence ever since. Charles’s wisdom and dedication to Chez cannot be underestimated: He was a writer, composer , and director and I dare say a feminist!
We will all miss his humor and his love of life. Our condolence to his wonderful family. We are always here for all of you!
Here I am frying an egg in a @permanentcollection COPPER egg spoon! This is the spoon I helped develop with my daughter @fannysinger for her company Permanent Collection and this is the first time I tried the copper spoon on the stove ! All my friends know that I love copper (the @chezpanisse kitchen is full of it) but I also love to cook with copper: it conducts heat faster and here it made the egg puff up even more ! Best of all, 5% of proceeds from sale of the products I helped develop for @permanentcollection benefit my @edibleschoolyard project ! #aliceseggspoon
Really missing Panisse today remembering the autumn light coming into the dining room. Had a delicious dinner “to go” last night from Chez and it felt like I was sitting at the kitchen table eating a crab cake with lemon mayonnaise ! Thank you to all the chefs who are working so hard.
I just came out to Bolinas for the weekend and took a walk by the ocean. It felt like all was right with the world ! When you are immersed in the beauty of nature, it just takes you away. Feel so lucky to be able to rest here while we wait for the stimulus package to pass.
The happiest moment of the year was dancing in my kitchen with Davia on New Years Eve to the music of Julian Pollock and trio. He plays every year in the Cafe Panisse . It is still possible to hear his wonderful New Years Medley on YouTube. Lots of Auld Lang Syne!
I know I keep posting about Ron Finley but he is always telling the truth! Why aren’t we talking about regenerative organic farming as the best way to address climate change? Such a delicious healthful way! And once you fall in love with nature, you change your habits. Solar panels yes but agriculture change is essential. Amen to my Sunday sermon.
Can you see me there? I am under the tree in the far right corner. It was so cold that I was wrapped in a blanket. But I didn’t mind because I was so incredibly happy! That was the year Joan Nathan, Jose Andres and I started an annual event called Sips and Suppers to raise money to feed the homeless in DC. When are we going to feed everyone in the country?
Sylvie and Jeremy worked at PANISSE and are now running great little place around the corner on Vine Street called FAVA . It serves really delicious and HEALTHY food to go. I love the limes and chilies so you can spice how you like it. I follow them @fava_onvine. You can too!
I wish you could taste this plate of “Food to Go” from Chez on Sunday. I have always loved boudin blanc with fried potatoes and apples. But this addition of savory cabbages was a perfect addition.
Rain blessed rain! My little garden and redwood wood tree need it so much.Everywhere in California we need water!
Listening to the rain is bringing peacefulness into my zoom filled day.
PANISSE is very unhappy today but so hopeful about GEORGIA!
It reminds me of the Vietnam war movement: it took students dying at Kent State before we paid attention as a nation. Maybe the breaking into the Capitol might wake us up !
Just found this button from our Slow Food Nation event in San Francisco in 2008. That message was so important then but is vital now. We need our new enlightened administration to embrace School Supported Agriculture so we can address climate, support regenerative organic farmers and farmworkers directly and locally. Just think, that at the same time, we could be feeding our children the most nourishing food! Every child deserves a free healthy delicious school lunch shared at a table with their classmates! I really believe that healing our country begins in the public school system. What values are we teaching our children?
I was charmed by this little “to go” container for Boulette’s at the SF Farmers Market! It fits exactly four kishu mandarins and had Boulette’s Larder printed on the leaf( hard to read here)I am always inspired by their meals because they just get the ripest and most beautiful organic ingredients right out their door at the Ferry Plaza market on Saturdays.
I have always loved this poster David Goines made for a Sunday brunch we were serving for about two months in the 80’s. It was hugely popular and my partner Tom Guernsey made omelets in the dining room ! There was even a line around the block. But one Saturday night about midnight Tom asked me if we had to do it anymore. I said no. It was too much. But now we will make a little something delicious “to go”this Wednesday from 9-11 in the courtyard of Chez.
So the poster comes to life again.
HAPPY NEW YEAR WITH MUSIC! These are our hats made by #momocausagi to remind me and you of New Years at PANISSE. And I want you to have this special link to our NEW YEARS MUSIC . It is a medley of Bernstein’s “Some Other Time”, followed by “Auld Lang Syne” and “Happy New Year”. Performed by Julian Pollack (piano), Noah Garabedian (bass) and Evan Hughes (drums).
I have already listened to it three times and it brought tears came to my eyes every time ..
Link in bio!!
Sherry Olsen painted OPEN on our French flag so you can tell when our marketplace is open when you are driving past in the car. Wednesday through Sunday you can order ahead (link in bio) or drop by. @chezpanisse
Here is another artistic food presentation at Boulette’s Larder! Yellow lentils are arranged for the New Year and are eaten for good luck. I plan to cook them with Indian spices a la my good friend Niloufer Ichaporia.
What a wonderful Christmas present I received from @antoni Porowski about the Edible Schoolyard today! His post meant so much to me. And thank you for your beautiful new book Kristen Loken : Food People ( Are The Best People). They really are!
I watched the wonderful Good Food Awards ceremony tonight and was so touched by Sarah Weiner’s words. For ten years the Good Food Awards has been celebrating the producers of products in this country that meet the criteria of good clean and fair…the Slow Food mantra .
My congratulations to all the incredible people who won!
I’ve been so inspired by the incredible work Ron Finley does to teach people about the power of growing your own food. That’s why I want to tell you about his MasterClass on gardening. He explains why regenerative organic agriculture is the future for the planet: Ron makes it so easy ! MasterClass has a gift one, get one free offer that you don’t want to miss.
There was an amazing tribute to 60 years of Arhoolie Records the other night and I just had to get up and dance when I heard the music! In the early days of Chez we danced to the live Cajun country musicians called The Louisiana Playboys! Thank you Chris Strachwitz for finding these great people and recording them for us. What a gift!
