Oona Chaplin Instagram – Today I remember #mlk, and how he stood for unity in the face of terror. Curious to think that he was considered an enemy of the state, a domestic terrorist by today’s standards, because he was the voice of a movement that was deeply unsettling for a world stuck in a different story.
But the truth of his heart that poured through him still steers the world toward the possibility of something better.
In these times of confusion, so many of my friends who praise this man are quick to spit bile and curse at other folks, and from what I can understand this isn’t coherent.
I think of all those “white” folk who hated him, who thought they were right and doing something good. I think of their progeny, some of whom love him as dearly as I do and are ashamed of their racist grandparents. I think of how tides change, how politics change, enemies change, but the truth of his words still stands, still moves us, and still invite us all to a more beautiful world.
It takes work, the really heavy lifting kind, the kind that demands we turn rage into compassion, fear to bravery, hatred to impeccability, and I’m all in.
