“Rejection is protection” . So I like to practice Radical Gratitude. Every so often I’ll remember an opportunity I really wanted but didn’t work out and see what came of it. I always discover that it never was what I hoped it would be: the people ended up being different, the project stalled or wasn’t as successful… . When I discover the reality of what was on the other side, I feel so much gratitude for the rejection. Inevitably I return to the fact that “the present is a present” and thank my ancestors for protecting me from an unnecessary painful lesson. . These agreements saved my life.✨ . In 2016 my therapist suggested I read The Four Agreements. At the time, I was in a job that was destructive physically and emotionally. I believed that my pain was all due to my current situation but I discovered that I was making my life harder based on my beliefs or agreements. . I believed that being “good” and being “a team player” would result in respect and appreciation. I believed keeping my head down and not asking for things made me low maintenance and more desirable to be around. I took everything personally and I was constantly seeking validation through people pleasing and constantly working. However, my behavior didn’t give me the results I thought it would. . Enter the pain. . Not only did my actions not result in more respect and appreciation, it led to my physical and emotional deterioration. I spent countless nights going over the disrespect trying to figure out how I got there. Why my friendships felt so empty. Why being alone gave me some solace and tons of self-flagellation from opening hurt locker after hurt locker; trying to figure out what went wrong. Judging every mistake I’ve ever made. . I’ve been practicing these agreements for years and little by slowly, I felt more and more relief. Saying ‘no’ to things that I didn’t want but would previously had said yes to out of fear. Fear of not being accepted, fear of others response, fear of not being pleasing to every person 100% of the time. . I excavated my past and the beliefs I picked up from surviving my childhood. The things I did to get love. I went over my personal agreements, and let them go. One by painful one. . Every year, I always work toward experiencing more freedom and love. It’s a practice, daily, moment to moment. I don’t know what you resolved to do in 2021, but I hope you find more space and peace this year. And if you don’t know how to do that, these agreements are a fabulous start. . What are some of your resolutions this year? How was your New Year? What’s on your mind? .
How are you playing the cards you’re holding? . . We all want what we don’t have. More money, longer hair, a legitimate growth spurt (that one was for me)… this is pretty human. What you do with that desire is a choice. Commonly, we fixate on the absence of what we want – for hours, days and for some of us, years. With the “If only’s”, “Why didn’t’s”, and “How come’s” to keep us company. This is making your desire a river. It flows away from you. . . Another choice is celebrating the hand you have and turning your desire into a well. Learn to appreciate what is present and make the most of it. Cultivate gratitude for what is in your hands and decide that it is enough. And “enough” isn’t where your story ends. . . For instance, I could complain about my vertical challenges, make fun of taller people but I don’t. (Ok, so I tried to google some jokes on tall people and they were either jokes where the punchline was on a short person 🤬 Or they were just stupid. #heightprivilege 🙄 I digress) Because I know that I have enough. I have enough height to reach the kitchen counter that I have enough strength to climb to reach the glasses inconveniently stored in the highest kitchen cabinets (🤬😌). You see what I did there? I am enough, I have enough – to do everything my heart desires. . . Whatever challenges you face this week – you are enough.
