Joel Van Moore Instagram – Here are the first 4 artists to kick off the January installment of #3by4project
@asmoeroc
Starting the first #3by4project with my usual wildstyle. Playing around with the composition by overlapping the letters on top of each other to establish a balanced overall form. Loving on how the A starts, initiating the momentum for the rest of the letters to react further.

I really want to explore form for as many steps of this project as I can. For the past 7 years or so I’ve been playing with a stacked approach to building pieces that start with a simple throw-up. I’ve had the same throw-up design forever – there were some moments where I lost my way with it, tried to get too complicated but over time I’ve refined it and felt at peace with its simplicity. My letter shapes were initially really influenced by Tank BH. When he first moved to Auckland he brought with him an approach to graffiti rooted in more of the classic Sydney public style. His tags were bold and he was the first writer in our city that consistently painted hollows and filled throw-ups in this style on the main streets. At age 16 I did my best to base mine off what he, Roske, Pane etc did during their visits to our shores.

I wanted to try out a few new things while painting this piece, working towards a less defined outline and finding a way to blend / overlap background and foreground better. I didn’t feel like everything I tried worked super well, so I’m looking forward to going back to keep working on this next month.
The next 4 pieces will be dropping in a couple days.
Stay tuned.
