Olivia Wilde Instagram – This is my second movie I’ve been lucky enough to work on with the incomparably creative and brilliant @katie_byron . Most people don’t realize how integral the role of the production designer is when making a movie. The brain-trust of director / cinematographer / production designer is responsible for what you see and feel on screen. Without Katie’s intuition, imagination, and determination, Booksmart and Don’t Worry Darling would never have become the worlds of texture and opulence that we dreamt of. Katie is an actual genius, and I’m incredibly lucky to be one of her collaborators. Her entire team worked day and night for many months to make this movie happen. They created a world that doesn’t exist, and I’m so thrilled to bring it to a screen (maybe a big one if they still exist) one day. I bow down to you, @katie_byron . Olivia Wilde Instagram – Had to delete my other Matty appreciation post cuz I accidentally gave away movie secrets (doh) but it gives me an excuse to say more about my main man, my teacher, my eyes, my hype beast, my friend, cinematographer @libatique . Matty has shot many of my absolute favorite films such as Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, Mother!, A Star Is Born, and many many more, including the movie on which we met as actress/alien and DP/rockstar: Cowboys & Aliens – where I watched him work and dreamed of one day being a director good enough to try and hire him. He encouraged me to go for it, and eventually shot my short film, “Wake Up”, last year, before agreeing to come shoot “Don’t Worry Darling”. He not only shot it… he basically birthed it with me. We were linked by a determination to achieve what always seemed impossible, and I could not be more proud of what we accomplished. He has taught me more than any film school could, and never lost patience with me while answering thousands of questions a day. He makes me love making movies more than I ever dreamed. We got to play with all the toys (drones, 100 ft cranes, biscuit rigs, edge arms, oh myyyy). I live to make you proud, Matty. When I asked her out on a date at Messhall Kitchen in Los Feliz in 2019, she was in the throws of awards season for her insanely fabulous work as costume designer of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, as well as running the rapidly growing and thriving @radvocacy, and yet she still took time to meet with me so I could pitch her my movie, and ask her hundreds of questions about Tarantino and of course Brad’s perfect moccasins. She was not only patient, kind, cool, and thoughtful, she was downright INSPIRING. I left the meeting with dozens of new ideas, challenged and lit UP. When she agreed to come on board to design Don’t Worry Darling, she was truly becoming my partner in storytelling, and would infuse our movie with her immaculate sense of style that was always grounded in deep narrative exploration. Our conversations felt like we were psychoanalyzing the characters – diving into their secret wants, habits, and astrological traits. Arianne taught me to have higher standards for the filmmaking process, while always encouraging me to fight for my ideas, and stay true to myself. She came up with one of my favorite sequences in the movie (involving the exquisite @ditavonteese) and always pushed me to keep creating even when the process was well under way. She also stuck with me when the movie got pushed a bunch of times. She never gave up on me and I’ll never forget it. I can’t wait to show you all what Arianne cooked up for this movie.
