#worldmentalhealthday I’ve struggled with bad anxiety on and off since right after my freshman year of college. And in the past few years, I realized that I specifically had OCD—and that OCD looks very different for most people than what popular culture would have one believe. Learning more about OCD was incredibly helpful in understanding my brain and the state of, honestly, kind of mental anguish I would find myself stuck in for days or weeks. Things that have helped: 1. Therapy! I’m so privileged to have good insurance that allows me to access affordable, great therapy, which is absolutely ridiculous. (Hi universal healthcare!) But if you are able to access mental health services, do! And if you’ve tried therapy but thought “meh,” I’d recommend trying a different provider before throwing the whole thing out. Amy was the fourth therapist I saw, and it was a drastically different experience. Find someone who’s right for you. 2. Talking to friends who have similar mental health struggles! A close friend actually helped me realize I have OCD, and her generosity and openness helped me to discuss my own mental health struggles more honestly than I ever had. It was so freeing. I love you and am very grateful to you @lidabee21 . 3. Journaling. A lot of times my anxiety appears when I’m suppressing other emotions, so sitting with what I’m feeling is super helpful for preventing that. 4. Being in nature, reading, taking walks, yoga, playing music… stuff that I enjoy and makes me feel present in the moment. 5. Watching Survivor. No explanation needed. (Hi, I know, I’m obsessed. But like literally one of the best parts of being obsessive is I can think about Survivor for like… a really long time.) ❤️❤️ to everyone, especially if you are battling a mental health struggle that feels unwinnable. I’m so sorry you have to deal with that, and I believe in you and times of joy and peace ahead!
Hey friends, this is a photo of Sha-Asia Washington and her partner Juwan Lopez. The second photo is of their baby Khloe. Last week Sha-Asia died at Woodhull Med Center in Bed-Stuy Bk during an emergency c-section. I knew that the maternal mortality rate was higher for Black women in the US than for white women, but not that it’s roughly 3 times as high nationally, and 12 times as high in NYC. Medical racism is horrifyingly real, with deadly results, and I am so sad for all the Black women (and Black people who don’t identify as women) in this country and my life who have gone through scary birthing experiences in which they felt unheard or dismissed, or who want to have children but don’t feel supported by this country’s medical system. I wish there was a way to link it here, but if you search “fundraiser for Juwan Lopez” and “require NY hospitals to publish data on pregnancy outcomes” you’ll find respectively a fundraiser for Juwan (and baby Khloe), and a petition to demand more transparency from NYC hospitals so families can make more informed decisions when choosing where to give birth, and so hospitals with high rates of maternal mortality and complications (esp. for Black women) can be held accountable. Other orgs to DONATE to: @blackmamasmatter and @villagebirthintl . As always if anyone has any orgs they want me to tag or info to share, please comment. Thank you @hillaar for those recs! #justiceforshaasia #shamonylives #blackdoulasmatter #blackmothersmatter

#Repost @justiceforgeorgenyc ・・・ In the last eleven months we have carried his image on signs and chanted his name in the streets. All in the name of another Black life that mattered. We’ve said this before, but the thing about martyrdom is that sometimes in the whirlwind and magnitude of a cause we lose sight of the life that sparked it. So today as we come out once more, we do so because George’s life mattered. We do so not just for a broader call to action that carries on, but for his humanity. For the life he lost. For his family and friends who’ve had to bear the unimaginable pain of the last eleven months and particularly these past three weeks of trial. We do so for George. 🖤 If you’d like to continue supporting the Floyd family, follow The George Floyd Memorial Foundation (@justiceforgeorge) and his brother, one of NYC’s own, Terrence Floyd (@mr_floyd_nyc_connection) and his org @wearefloydinc • • • (My words now:) Nothing will ever give Gianna Floyd her daddy back. Nothing will give his family and friends their cousin, boyfriend, brother back. This will always be a horror and tragedy. But I hope they feel a little more peace than they did yesterday. This story is not and cannot be about the condemnation of “one bad apple.” We must radically change the systems that enabled Derek Chauvin to murder George Floyd, that make it historic Chauvin was actually punished. As @drjasonpolitics just said on MSNBC, a win would have been George Floyd not being murdered in the first place. #justiceforgeorgefloyd #blacklivesmatter #defundthepolice

Whether you believe in carceral punishment or not, in the system we currently have, this is so disgustingly unjust. Then again, this system wasn’t built to protect Breonna Taylor. RIP Breonna. So sorry to her family and friends. #nojusticenopeace #defundthepolice
