Slowly catching up to the British Vogue feature editorial celebration. Edward @edward_enninful told me “you are loved”. While I was basking in my glory, waiting to receive the BV images, I was working on my documentary (will share that later). But this supportive audience was so appreciative of me being recognized in this way your love was outpouring. Close allies were re-posting so fast and the comments, were hundreds. I was trying to keep up. But here I am to say how proud I am of this feature commissioned by the EIC of BV. It was a special shoot because I was asked to choose all of the production team except the editor/stylist Dena @denagia. I chose the Photograper @sharifhamza, makeup @porschefabulous, hair @edrisjustedris, and the writer @joanmorgan. I knew all except the Photograper Sharif who was an assistant of Steven Klein for 5 years. Once I learned that, I wanted us to meet and I decided. Unique moment because it was all our first time working with British Vogue. We went in as “new bees” and had a spiritual and joyful day. One of the comments on a post …said “it was about time recognizing Ms Bethann in this way. Finally”. I thought, I have been recognized often. But on second thought, not like this. It is important and social media responded, and rightfully so. No matter who you are, if you do good, beyond yourself and live long enough to tell a tale or two, things happen. These images are three of six, and I especially like that tag line “Mother of Industry”…it’s undeniable. It seems to be the way I have rolled. Thank you British Vogue, Edward. Sarah, Dena, Sharif, Porsche, Edris, Joan. Just to say it’s was an exceptional experience from the COVID testing, the fitting, the shoot day, entire production, the head wraps and hat tilts all created and controlled by the genius styling of Dena G. All by GUCCI. All and all a very special experience, never to be forgotten.

Today it being International Women’s Day…I have so many women on my mind that I am very proud of. Some who are close to me and some from a far. I am blessed to have witness strength and talent in so many in these many decades I have lived. My mother and grandmother were unique characters. And I was allowed to be who I was with little restraint and enormous support. If I was to start naming the women that have my attention today, there are far too many in every generation, Z, Y, X and we Baby Boomers….I have always seen and been inspired by other women. As well as supported by other women, as I am today. I know if you live a strong and compassionate existence you are rewarded by support of others. Not only do you inspire you gain continued insight and remain inspired. As I continue to age I am thinking what to leave behind and how ? Not just a book and film, but a tangible environment. As a woman I have never felt lesser, lucky me. One main reason, I didn’t come up in a corporate environment. My growth and support professionally was the apparel industry, in the garment center of NYC. All roads for me started and led to style. Featured here in the current W magazine Volume One 2021 “The Best Performance Issue” 📷by Justin French @frenchgold @wmag I would like to suggest in honor of Int’l Women month, you purchase and plant a tree in support of women at Treedom.com.
It’s all about Legacy…. Many of you would not have heard of the model Carol LaBrie in your lifetime. And there is far too much distraction to have learn of her as you stroll through this life. But as I was starting to spread my wings in the world of fashion design and fashion models, girls like Carol LaBrie, Barbara Cheesborough, Naomi Sims, were happening here in New York and Paris. This was the late 60’s and early 70’s. The story of the model of color tells an inspiring tale. For me going to Paris and seeing Carol in rare form was like being at a peep show. Exciting to watch and be around it. She was in the launch of Essence Magazine. The models marching in the street with fist clenched, arms outstretched, she being the lead model (1970). The image back then was everything representing the current cultural moment. So seeing her a few years later in Paris was everything. But everything was everything then. The newness, bohemianism and style of the time was ever inspiring. And Carol contributed to that environment there in Paris. She was the muse of Kenzo (r.i.p). When she opened up his shows, you knew she was part of the House of Kenzo. It was so personal with such pride. She had a great walk, no swing of the hips, it had purpose, it was personal and she was tall, it had a strong feeling of natural intent and ownership. Every great runway model should have, “a feeling of intent with purpose and ownership”. But that confidence is built by being a muse…rare is a muse to be found these days. Carol had amazing free flowing style with a personality to match. Besides being a great model of a time gone by and her relationship with Kenzo was unique. She later married the love of her life, photographer Uli Rose and birth five children. And their children had children. Carol LaBrie passed away February 18, 2021. I am full of many memories. But if nothing more in memory, she made a difference during her time. In addition having five children and becoming a grandmother, she left behind a loved clan. She was good to those she loved and liked, and never wasted her time with others. Rest In Peace, Ms. Rose. I will always remember you. #carollabrie

January 10, 2016 was the passing of our dear David Bowie. Still a hard pill to swallow, for me, the family, friends and fans worldwide. But today I think of him on the memorial of his death and days before. Because we would have been in deep conversation about politics and surely about the Georgia Senate upset. I had place my money on “horses” that needed to win and supported the energy of those who were going to turn the wheels of time, Stacy Abrams and those like her doing all it would take to win, getting those to the polls one way or another. I had faith it could happen, confident about Rev Raphael Warnock but saw a dim tunnel for the young Jon Ossoff. Nonetheless I put my money where my doubt was and prayed that this spirited young man of 33 years could beat his opponent. I was impressed with him. A dear friend questioned the party’s selection because he was Jewish. Old thinking I thought, as I continued to pray because he was “my horse”. Surely I had doubts until he was behind 919 votes. I went to sleep with hopes that like “Seabiscuit” he would come from the rear. I woke to him doing just that but too soon to call. That’s all I needed. The second youngest Senator ever in the history of the USA. Joe Biden being the youngest at 30 yrs old. Finally the Senate had a shift in power. In my mind, my few dollars and my eye on the prize of Jon Ossoff did it’s do. It may be a spiritual way of thinking, but with a few bucks for each candidate and the wind to the back of Ms Abrams and the crews, thats all I had. Since then and thereafter it would have been fun to hear David as he watched “those” scale the walls of the Capitol. I could only imagine what his take would have been on all. Congratulations Georgia ! And with you David always on my mind. @jonossoff @staceyabrams @raphaelwarnock #georgia #davidbowie

WINNER !!! If you know me, I am a Harry Styles fan, so last night at the @recordingacademy intimate production of the Grammy Awards produced many wonderful wins and performances. Harry’s first time to the Grammy’s gained a great win and performance. Of course looking stylish as always. Winner of Pop Solo Performance: “Watermelon Sugar”. I was so proud. Just to add I am crazy for union of “Silk Sonic” @anderson._paak @brunomars. Had the pleasure of seeing the song performed before last night. All were great and a well produced show. Proud of Beyoncé for her historical win Happy for Megan Three Stallion who needs a bit of media training. Always good to see a Cardi B performance. Dua Lipa has worked hard so well deserved. Billie Eilish and brother Finneas were laid back as usual. Just naming a few. All to say, this type of Grammy production has allowed more of a focus on the artist and less on all the outside noise. For me “less being more”. Seeing the artist and meet community of others that we don’t normally know. Felicidades once again @harrystyles and ALL others. @gucci @harry_lambert @alessandro_michele
Happy New Year to All 🎉🎊 ‘If 2020 didn’t bring the Hustle out of you, it ain’t in you.” posted recently by @diddy. I couldn’t agree more. Meanwhile check this out what I recently discovered. Perhaps you can do better then me and discover four words, my eyes only mastered two. Meanwhile my mantras are a few that have been with me many years that I have kept. If you can let me know what you un-cover. Meanwhile may the pandemic ease up and we the people win the war with conscious living. And vaccines are the lethal weapon. ❤️
About last night…. Jefferson and Lynn try to find common ground with the support and guidance of Dr Bowlan. Yes that was my “small screen” debut premiered last night in the 1st of my 4 episodes on CW network series Mondays at 9p #Blacklightning . I know, you didn’t know I was an actress…well as long as there is time there is opportunity. Honored to have been considered. @monsieurdirector 💕@cw_blacklightning @officialchristineadams @cress_williams Thank you for the moment…
This Thanksgiving holiday of 2020 has given us all an enormous amount to ponder as we reflect on this year gone by. So much has happen to the world as we knew it. But mostly to our surrounding communities. If ever there was a time to sit quiet and think about our vulnerabilities, it’s been these months gone by. It has brought it to our knees, and if not, sit down and be still. Life is no longer the same as it was, people are dying in the thousands whether you knew them or not. It has its effect. This is the moment to become more simple in your thinking and expectations. Identify more with the common man. Be more generous with what you have, because many are suffering with having lost income, employment, housing and their good mental health. This is the time to think of others besides yourself, because you are equally as vulnerable perhaps with more of a cushion to fall upon. But to fall is to fall. It’s not from how high because it’s all relative. I am grateful for what I have achieved but more grateful for where I come from, far less than what I have. I have always believed in “keeping my feet on the ground”, an expression may it be, but more conscious to live it. I will always identify more from the neighborhood and community I come from then the world I have gotten to known and live. No matter what little or more I have I will always continue to give. May I always walk with the broken as I sit amongst the great. Because this is no time to feel better than another soul on earth. Lights out comes to all, no matter who you are or what you have. So stay in the realm of kindness and be grateful. And hope the only people you are better then are those who are mean and un-caring. Finish this year and beyond on a kind note.
ALBER ELBAZ..the Moroccan born Israeli fashion designer who I have known since the late 80’s, I owe him my recognition. I had my model agency Bethann Management on N Moore St and Alber was the assistant to Geoffrey Beene. We supported each other. He liked a model I had name Roshumba and had me work with him to convince Mr Beene, as Mr Beene was no easy walk in the park. But after many “go-sees” Roshumba was accepted to do fittings, presentations, then shows. Alber and I had to be wise in maintaining this relationship with Mr Beene. Alber was thrilled that it worked. Eventually he left NY. Years later, I remember walking into an environment of fashion humans and heard my name loud in that distinctive Alber voice “Bethann”!!!…years had gone by, there he was, making it on his own. And he never forgot me. Mid 90’s the fashion industry started taking an unfortunate turn to the Caucasian “anonymous” model. By 2007 I was on my “bandwagon” reflecting this unfortunate turn as “not cool”. Alber was part of that fashion moment as well. Knowing he had risked his job years before for the inspiration of a black model. I reached out to him and he played semantics with me, talked in circles. I understood, it was that moment in fashion, that it was what it was. But thereafter when the tide slowly begin to turn, Alber discovered the lovely Kinee Diouf of Senegal in Paris and added her to his cabine. She was a modern version of Roshumba. Later, Alber allowed me to film, with a camera man, his Lanvin resort show in NY I think it was 2010 or after. I wanted to capture on film what was happening and not happening in the industry at that time. He and I discuss what I was witnessing and he took the high road and made light of it. But I knew Alber had the appetite for the model of color and when the market began to turn further, he stepped way up. After he left Lanvin, years later, I saw him in 2018 at the BoF conference in England, a voice yelled loud..“Bethann”!!!. Yes, once again it was Alber. Soar in peace, see you on the other side. #alberelbaz #gentlegiant #soulfulhuman
EARTH DAY This Earth Day, I’m joining @NATGEO in sharing one of the places on the planet that matters most to me: my hammock in my home in upstate New York. Celebrate your love for the planet with us by sharing a spot you care about. #ShareYourSpot. I had great joy teaming up with @lesguzman who photographed me for a feature for issue #12 of Upstate Diary coming out now. Nice to see I was put on the cover. I love the images inside and story to boot. It’s a great magazine that covers people of interest who are creators with lifestyles close to nature..all over the world. Not just in upstate NY. I wish you all could see the magazine and my feature. Well you could if you ordered it. It’s a great mag. I don’t normally like myself in photos but this I am thrilled to share. A special shout out to: @upstate_diary @lesguzman @jamespscully @kateorne 💌 Thank you for capturing me.
Happy Holiday season to all… Grateful for the most challenging year to date. Allowing me to recognize so many things about myself and others. Being a bit introvert has allowed me the quite time needed. No need to travel, limited social engaging, no dining out, living quietly in the mountain home of NY that I purchased 30 yrs ago. Finally I found its purpose. Most time due to the pandemic, eight months, with dips in the City. Also flights to Atlanta, Ga. to film my episodes on “Black Lightning”. I have noticed how much money I saved not doing the usual. Grateful for the support and my retainment by global Gucci . I have been to focus on my personal family besides my family at large. Focus on the things that truly matter is needed to be seen as we leave this year moving into the next. Recognize who you are and what you need to be, sometimes it’s to just to accept what it is. What seems bad isn’t necessarily so, perhaps different than what you are familiar with. I always say “if I wake up then it’s all good , rain or shine, another day to make it happen. How can that be bad ? As Dwayne said “Some times you get what you get” Grateful to see another day and be in the game of life. There is much to do, so get your rest during this holiday stretch . Blessings to you all. #sometimesyougetwhatyouget @iamcreesummer @kadeemhardison @thehillmanfiles
This truly has been a moment in time, living in a global pandemic, and now a new virus…hate violence attacking Asian-Americans. Especially on the East coast, at least in my city of New York. I have always had long term relationships creatively, working with and representing Asians, as I have with blacks, whites, and latins. So this slugging an elder or younger Asian walking through the city and unexpectedly being beaten up in a violent way while being cursed and told horrible stupid things, is totally not cool. I try to make sense of why now and in this manner ? I have an origin that I blame for this wave of current violence. The prejudice is not new, but the overt I don’t care who knows or sees me be violent in broad day light, is getting to a fever pitch. Yesterday in daylight a 65 yr old woman walking, a sizable man kicked her in the chest to the ground and then stomped her 3 times on her head and then kicked her. A couple of punk males watched and chose to do nothing except closed their door, never asked could she use help. Or consider how to help prevent or spook the imbalanced fool whose attacking for no reason. This I do not expect from my fellow man. Yelling is better than doing nothing. A helpless older woman was stomped and kicked like she was a rodent. Now seeing luxury fashion brands stepping up to support and be in active alignment with organizations is a step forward. Thank you @gucciequilibrium @gucci because this is a serious problem that is effecting our society. @goldhouseco @aaldef May we all care enough to make change and help solve and end this social and cultural injustice. 🙏🏾

Those of you who are familiar with my journey know how important Willi Smith was to me both personally and professionally. Join @dario.studio, @jacolbysatt and myself tomorrow Thursday, March 11th at 2:00PM EST for a virtual discussion on Willi’s legacy and what we can learn from his legacy about forging multidisciplinary collaborations. In the 70s and 80s Williwear, through various collaborations and a combination of performance, film, and conceptual art, pioneered a balance between commercial success and artistic expression that has served as the blueprint for fashion collabs for over 30 years. This virtual program is hosted by @cooperhewitt in conjunction with their exhibition, Willi Smith: Street Couture. Registration is free. Link in bio.
BREATHE WORK PRACTICE Repeat 10-30x Then make that call, have that talk, join that meeting. REMEMBER TO BREATHE EVERYDAY— @onandon.co This is the Holy Month of Ramadan… So many things we gain during this time, we must also give to others. Today we learned the verdict of the police officer who killed Mr George Floyd. GUILTY was the verdict…this marks a historic day. A gift to a troubled society to help recognize the injustices that are happening too frequently. We are all blessed if we are breathing to learn this verdict. Still we wait for the sentencing. No matter because wherever he serves time, it better be a blue collar facility, which is impossible. Karma Let us do right and be thoughtful as we move through this life cause it’s messy out there. Peace be with you 💜☪️
