🙏🏼 deep bows to our frontline workers. In India and everywhere.
.
UPDATE: I’m very political but choose not to indulge my politics during a humanitarian crisis. This is a repost of a tweet by a DOCTOR in India. Please don’t post political views- even ones I am aligned with- here. The polarising discourse emerging from India is toxic and draining from both sides. Use your own platform to vent your anger and anguish. Let’s be clear, the current government has a frightening amount of failings. But this is not about that. This is solely dedicated to celebrating frontline workers in India. Yes, the administration has failed India, the negligence and lack of support for citizens is monstrous. There is a an indictment of the governance that led to this situation embedded in the words. If you can’t see it, we don’t see language as a subversive weapon in the same way 🙏🏼 my deepest condolences to everyone who has lost someone they love during these devastating times.

Jazz is threaded through my memories, from sultry Bombay evenings of wonder and discovery on the rooftop of the Ripon Club for jams organised by @adsingholive to electric Jazz Yatra nights with friends like @farrokhchothia. I wrote in Close to the Bone about how my life in the 90s resembled a jazz score – sometimes harmonious, often times spinning out into discordant notes, but always surprising and revelatory. When @arrahman approached me to play the character of Sheela, the ‘jazz diva of Shillong’, I was thrilled to embody her as a sort of homage to the soundtrack of my life.
I hope you all will be able to experience 99 Songs when it’s released on a steaming platform, and once India has weathered through this horrendous crisis. For now, here’s some bts of Sheela.
Stay safe. Stay home. Double mask. Play some jazz. As Sheela says: ‘jazz is for the living’

Science says it’s good for you too:
.
‘When you listen to jazz, the music stimulates a calming effect on your body, signalling your central nervous system to lower your respiratory rate and heart rate. According to research, jazz also improves your verbal ability, focus, memory and mood, as was noted in patients that had suffered from a stroke.’

Let me preface this by saying I’m a terrible dancer. But, hey, it doesn’t stop me from throwing my hips and expressions into it 🤣

Does this song sound familiar? Well, you may recognize it from #BollywoodHollywood… #RangRang. Except it hit a little different in 2020…but @lisaraniray proved she can still kill it 18 years later! 😉

Posted @withregram • @colorsofhoney I recently watched a video by @Kurzgesagt, where they spoke about Emergence and how stupid things become smart together, like ants. And although humans are not stupid, we do indeed do great things when we work together, especially for a cause and greater good. The key is to be selfless and empathize with people in need. In a time when selflessness is so crucial for human lives, many, unfortunately are taking advantage of this situation in India and profiting off of people’s dire state. Oxygen cylinders are being sold for 10x the normal price, and many just choose to think that nothing is happening, that the media is blowing everything out of proportion. Painting a rosy picture about the situation and ignoring what others are going through will ultimately come to hurt us all. The time to be selfless is now.

I’ve recently come to realise there’s a splintering beauty and the type that clots your blood. And each are necessary, in their own season.
Posted @withregram • @ijroth HEART BREAKING 💔 What is happening in the world, and particularly in India right now, where industrial oxygen supply is running out, and people die waiting for hospital beds, is nothing short of a humanitarian crisis. 😢 A crisis that exposes systems that have never been designed for the benefit of all but for just a few; a crisis that highlights the many brave and powerful stories of strangers helping strangers; a crisis that is here to stay if we collectively don’t turn around in the way we live our daily lives, treat nature with respect, eat the right food, consume mindfully, and give without expecting back. 🌿💖 If you feel helpless or overwhelmed right now, and don’t know what to do, remember that each of us can help in little small ways within our direct environment. Check on your neighbors, and send fruits, medicine or kind words. Buy dog or cat food for the ones who have pets, or take them in for a while. Donate money to verified organisations, help finding beds or doctors, and ensure that you are not creating more unnecessary fear or worry. Call your friends and family, especially the ones who are not well or feel very low, and cheer them up, or just listen with as much empathy as possible. Never forget: every little act of kindness matters as it is the light that shines with hope in times of intense darkness. 💖

What does it mean to lose someone? To answer this timeless question, bestselling author Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi draws on a string of devastating personal losses of his mother, of his father and of a beloved pet to craft a moving memoir of death and grief.
With surgical detachment and subtle feeling, Shanghvi charts the landscape of bereavement as he takes the reader down the dark, winding path to healing. Clear-eyed and intimate, Loss is the first Volume of non-fiction by one of India’s most beloved writer of life experience.
Loss is a finely tuned reflection on the death of parents, the effects of orphaning, a sustained search in which you’ll hear echoes of your own relationship with death and parents because at each moment Shanghvi opens outward toward vision instead of remaining mired in sorrow. You’ll be delighted by the flexibility and turns of an elegant mind’ – David Vann, author of Legend of a Suicide
We are in the midst of extraordinary grief ~ from helplessness, desperation, insecurity and loss. Books have often offered solace.

I have never been as attuned to the moon and it’s cycles as since the pandemic began. I won’t venture to say silver lining, but the moon’s presence, the way it dresses and delights through all its phases, has provided late night asylum when I need it.
Posted @withregram • @aninditaghose The @parisreview has a new monthly column by @ninamaclaughlin called The Moon is Full to “illuminate humanity’s long-standing lunar fascination.”
From the first column:
“Between us / we had seventeen words / to describe the moon,” writes the poet Arundhathi Subramaniam. I wonder what they were. Let’s see how many we can come up with.
Before that, one word. In more than two dozen languages, the words for month and moon are the same. In Croatian, mjesec; Czech, měsíc; Slovak, mesiac. In Filipino, buwan; in Malay, bulan. In Japanese, 月 (tsuki); Hmong, lub hlis; Maori, marama; Igbo, onwa; and Zulu, inyanga. In Romanian, Estonian, Uzbek, and Turkish: lună, kuu, oy, ay. Our timekeeper, our month maker, our definer of cycles, tetherballing around us in 27.32-day spans.”
