#Souffle (my twin daughters) will be three soon. Chances are the Eastern European chocolate coated biscuit cake my mother served for my third birthday will not be part of the celebration. But there will be candles. No puffy sleeved frocks but a strong possibility of uneven bangs as well.

Reminiscing of the days when we walked free,
The seagulls squawking by,
With the water slipping beneath
And the sand tickling our feet
Reminiscing of the days when we danced and jumped,
In the little muddy puddles,
With an abandon so reckless
And the rain pitter-pattering on our
little heads
Reminiscing of the days when we gleamed,
At the sight of the sweets in our favourite bakeries,
The sizzles of the delicious patties
And the bustles of the local bazaars.
But there is nothing more to reminisce now,
The spokes of the wheels refuse to move forward
And the hands on the clock lay paralysed
The reality so quiet and haunting
Soon this time too shall pass
And the world will sigh again
But as humans are and the humans will be
We will find this time, maybe, as a reminiscent of something
Reminiscing of the quiet days gone by,
The lullaby of the soft summer,
Where we slept a little longer
And stayed awake a little late
Enjoying the warmth of our homes.

What allows children to feel a sense of security and belonging wherever they are? What needs to happen for a child to wrap small arms across a small chest in realisation: I am home.
Sheela, the jazz diva, in possession of that most talismanic quality: she knows when to be a goof.

The rain
is
falling without philosophy
without etiquette
to stir melancholy
in the people
on the pavement below.
I think only
of the scent of persistence
and the metallic wet crowd
pressing on like pigeons
Step
Dip
Lift
soap bubbles
on the footpath
who lowers and who raises
and when to surrender?
Because there is not room enough
in this obsidian city
for two umbrellas to walk at equal height
Standing at the curb
heart sluice
open
while I
a warden of damp
watch pelting
after thoughts
tucked into tiny handbags
while I
like a foreigner arrived
bloat into Byzantine blue
then erupt quietly
in the rain.

Posted @withregram • @alexapolar There’s this quote by Benjamin Franklin… either write something worth reading or do something worth writing. Somehow this exquisitely written book conveys both. I’m halfway through and I know I have never personally physically been to some of the mentioned locations (if not most), but somehow I’m able to visualize every single word as if it were a memory I had forgotten. I wish I could properly articulate encouraging phrases to convince others to read this book. The best I can do is just to simply recommend it…highly recommend Close to the Bone by Lisa Ray.
Side note, if you do decide to give it a read (trust me, you won’t regret it)…find a local independently owned bookstore and see if they have it. Support local shops. Get a great book. Win! Win!

HOW did I make it thus far without Tika on my feed? Incroyable. (Looks a tad like Sheela, the Jazz Diva, no?)

Alora, Close to the Bone somehow reached Italia. This is special, having lived in Milano and written about my Italian interlude in the book, and the influence it exerted on my aesthetics, personal philosophy and my taste for drama. Forza raggazi, continua a leggere 💥
Posted @withregram • @laottomani • There are few people I would love to sit down with and talk. Lisa Ray is one of these people. Reading her book is like being sit in an intimate cafe and listen to her speaking about her life while filling the air with hand gestures, looks and that unique and fascinating accent of her voice. Her words are powerful, and when reading you can hear her voice taking your hand and guide you around the world, her friendly giggle and her deep eyes revealing her truth, her learnings, her incredible story. I’ve felt her writing vibrating my soul in more ways during the reading, and when the last page has been turned I felt like looking at life differently. You can try to describe Lisa Ray in one word, but I doubt you succeed. She is full of shades and I think this is what makes her the kind of person I would miss when coffee has been drunk, and she left. •

Beautiful advice on writing poetry. These letters make me feel intimate to the poet. It’s like reading his mind but without meeting him in person.
My dear Taylor—Your alteration strikes me as being a great Improvement—And now I will attend to the punctuations you speak of—The comma should be at soberly, and in the other passage, the Comma should follow quiet. I am extremely indebted to you for this alteration, and also for your after admonitions. It is a sorry thing for me that any one should have to overcome prejudices in reading my verses—that affects me more than any hypercriticism on any particular passage—In Endymion, I have most likely but moved into the go-cart from the leading-strings—In poetry I have a few axioms, and you will see how far I am from their centre.

My newest stack, and not because Time Magazine told me to read them.
A few pages into #Aftershocks and I had to put it aside. Such beautiful, melancholic language is a gash to my chest. I’m also very partial to books that place an agonising search for belonging at the centre, as writer Nadia Owusu has.
Detransition, Baby is apparently, ‘An unforgettable portrait of three women, trans and cis, who wrestle with questions of motherhood and family making . . . Detransition, Baby might destroy your book club, but in a good way.” according to Andrea Lawlor, author of Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl. Well. Any book that brings out the Lord of the Flies qualities in book clubs has my attention. Torrey Peters, the author is a trans woman who writes from inside experience without sugar coating.
#ConcreteRose is a cautionary tale about teen parenthood by talented writer Angie Thomas and I’m on board for where she’s taking me.
