During the ‘Black Summer’ fires in Australia last year, fire entered the World Heritage-listed Nightcap National Park and devastated portions of the endangered rainforest. Unlike dry forest, rainforests are not adapted to withstanding fire – many have never seen it in their lifetime. But with climate change, the threat of fire is growing. Please support @bigscrublandcare in their work researching the impacts of fire and restoring the critically endangered, Gondwana-descendant rainforests near my hometown. 💚

Why protect a forest?
Older trees sequester more Carbon than young trees, and carbon is more effectively stored in the ecological community of a forest than trees in isolation. Preserving and expanding mature forests, like the Big Scrub, is important for carbon storage and responding to the global warming challenges we face now and in the coming decades.

Why protect and restore a forest?
In order to solve the climate crisis, we must support frontline communities working to restore precious native forests, which act as ‘carbon sinks’ by sequestering carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in leaves, trunks, branches and soil. @bigscrublandcare has been protecting ans replanting critically endangered rainforests around Byron Bay in Australia since 1993, and by helping restore these lush subtropical rainforests, we can help beat climate change.

Season 2!
We often think of nature as very remote and separate from people, but in reality, some of the ecosystems that are the richest in biodiversity are also the richest in cultural diversity. As much as 80% of the worlds forest biodiversity is found on lands protected by indigenous peoples. The only way to thrive is together, and this Earth Day @oneearth is supporting local communities in their continuous work protecting and restoring their lands.
