She delivered her baby via emergency #csection at #32weeks and came back to win a Gold medal and recently qualify for the #TokyoOlympics Other athletes outraged by Nike’s decision broke their NDA and told stories we athletes and moms know are true, but have been too scared to tell publicly: “If we have children, we risk pay cuts from our sponsors during pregnancy and afterward. It’s one example of a sports industry where the rules are still mostly made for and by men.” Allyson Felix stated, “What I’m not willing to accept is the enduring status quo around maternity. I asked Nike to contractually guarantee that I wouldn’t be punished if I didn’t perform at my best in the months surrounding childbirth. I wanted to set a new standard. If I, one of Nike’s most widely marketed athletes, couldn’t secure these protections, who could?” Nike declined. She will now represent the US in the Tokyo Olympics wearing her own authentic brand. Moral of the Story: Our capabilities and strengths as #mothers are not defined by maternity or our #Birth Story. After broad public outcry and a congressional inquiry, Nike announced a new maternity policy for all sponsored athletes on Aug. 12. The new contract guarantees an athlete’s pay and bonuses for 18 months around pregnancy.
