We were inseparable as kids …learning to play instruments together, playing on the same sports teams and spending long hours exploring the woods behind our house. It was an idyllic childhood so it came as a shock when we were 16 that I developed a fairly serious depression. Seeing the change that had come over me and my decline, Bryce refused to let me fall and did everything he possibly could to pull me out of it. I was lucky to have him right there. I wrote “Brycie” with help from our sister @jess_dess as a love letter to thank him for looking after me then and now. Michael Brown made this beautiful video that incorporates some photos from our childhood. Like this entire album, it’s deeply meaningful to me. Listen to @bigredmachineadjv’s ‘8:22am (feat. @laforceband)’ and watch the new video directed by @michaelbrowndesign at the link in my bio. I wrote the music to 8:22am one day in the summer of 2018. I called the sketch “8:22am” because at the time Justin was setting his alarm for that hour and minute, the time he was born, to get up and go for a long walk every day, to feel better. I was imagining music for walking and the moment someone dear to you was born. And I was thinking about how the origin and purpose of Big Red Machine is friendship and acknowledging and embracing the way music can help pick you up or give at outlet for feelings you need to express. Justin later improvised melodies and words to this sketch (his original improvised words and melodies are still in the recording) and the line “It’s that time of the morning, when I was born” was the first thing that he sang. It gave us a roadmap that later my friend the Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson and I would follow through and write words to — and the incredible Ariel Engle (La Force) then developed our words and her own melodies and vocal arrangement that weaves in and out with Justin’s original. Ariel brought the song to life in a way we could never have imagined. The chorus to me is the critical answer to “Hutch” (which is about losing a friend) on the album: Whenever you’ve lost space Whenever I lost you I was just like you Remember I’m right here Whenever I’m needed @jt_bates_, @bradleywcook and @blobtower all bounced off this music at Long Pond in May 2019 and @physlew played his brilliant saxophone in Brooklyn at Pioneer works. @postmoderndrummer sent me his drum machine loop from home in Cincinnati. 8:22am is one of my favorite BRM songs we’ve ever made. It’s a song about wanting to save someone who is very dear to you from a proverbial fate they didn’t deserve or expect — and showing them empathy and encouragement to pick themselves up. The music is meant to be hopeful and cathartic and @jasontreuting’s drums bring so much power to it. I also somehow got away with soloing on acoustic guitar throughout much of the song. @blobtower’s harmonies and my brother @brycedessner’s string arrangement gave me the cover I needed to pull it off. Listen to Hoping Then and watch the new video directed by @michaelbrowndesign at the link in my bio. I made the music for this song in Paris in 2019 while living there. I had a small space in the Gaite Lyric theater where I had an out of tune upright piano, some guitars and basic recording gear. I built the soundscape that underlies the song by processing audio and re-sequencing elements of Birch with help from @arsononly…then I played new chord progressions on rubber bridge guitar and piano to it. It felt new to me. @blobtower and I wrote the words and melodies together in Texas and worked on the form more. The feeling of sometimes being simultaneously anxious and unable to sleep but also deeply grateful for your life and loved ones…is something we both could relate to. For some reason this song reminds me of Arthur Russell’s music. My brother @brycedessner’s orchestration and @lisahannigan’s angelic vocals add so much to it. Michael Brown’s beautiful impressionistic video for this song captures the feeling in the music so well.
