I made the music for this song in Paris in 2019 while living there. I had a small space in the Gaite Lyric theater where I had an out of tune upright piano, some guitars and basic recording gear. I built the soundscape that underlies the song by processing audio and re-sequencing elements of Birch with help from @arsononly…then I played new chord progressions on rubber bridge guitar and piano to it. It felt new to me. @blobtower and I wrote the words and melodies together in Texas and worked on the form more. The feeling of sometimes being simultaneously anxious and unable to sleep but also deeply grateful for your life and loved ones…is something we both could relate to. For some reason this song reminds me of Arthur Russell’s music. My brother @brycedessner’s orchestration and @lisahannigan’s angelic vocals add so much to it. Michael Brown’s beautiful impressionistic video for this song captures the feeling in the music so well.
